Law enacted to curb domestic violence: JKSCW

JAMMU, APRIL, 12:- Jammu and Kashmir State Commission for Women (JKSCW) is contemplating to set up its branches at District Level and in this regard a proposal has been submitted to the Government for approval.
This was stated by the Chairperson JKSCW, Advocate Shamima Firdous today while addressing a legal awareness camp for women at Ramnagar Kathua. She said necessity for opening of these branches is must to protect women of far off areas from violence besides empowering them for living a dignified life.
The Chairperson said that government has enacted a new law to protect the women from domestic violence. She said under the Act the persons who breach the law could get two months imprisonment.
The one day legal awareness camp for women was organized by JKSCW in collaboration with National Commission for Women (NCW) New Delhi. The camp was first ever organized in such a remote area for awareness of women. Hundreds of women attended the camp and were acquainted by the functionaries of the Commission about safeguarding their rights and to empower themselves in every field of life.
The Chairperson said motive of the Commission is to safeguard the rights of women for living a dignified life in the society. She said the Commission is creating mass awareness among the women folk, adding since the inception of the Commission in the State 30 legal awareness camps were held in various areas of the State by the Commission.
Mrs. Shamima underscored the need for imparting quality and professional education to females which she said is the only tool to remove gender disparity from the society. She said though the Government has done a lot for pursuing gender education there is lot to be done in this regard.
She stressed on focused attention of the Government for upgrading facilities like medicare, skill development, soft loan etc for making women self reliant in rural areas.
The Chairperson said the Government has launched various welfare schemes for women and they should come forward to take full benefit of these schemes.
She called upon women to pay heed to education, strive hard and excel in every field. She also stressed on large participation of women in strengthening the democratic institutions adding the women should strengthen unity for their common cause and elect female representatives in Panchayats which she said would prove beneficial to mitigate their miseries. She assured full support of the Commission for protection of their rights besides free legal assistance.
She called upon the women to come forward and bring the accesses, if any, to the notice of the Commission so that necessary steps would be taken for their redressal.
She said Commission is paying focused attention for formulation of gender budgeting in every section. She said this would uplift the lot of women and bring them out from clutches of miseries.
Hafeeza said the Commission has so far organized 13 gender budgeting workshops at state, divisional and district levels, and would organize more such workshops in the state, adding the aim of these workshops is to formulate gender budgeting for the welfare of women.
