Welcoming the joint statement of foreign secretaries of the two countries Ghulam Ahmed Mir appealed to the two countries to take a Kashmir centric approach in the talks. “Talks won’t become a fruitful exercise unless the core issue of Kashmir is given due preference” said JKPM supremo. Ghulam Ahmed Mir said the key to peace and prosperity in south Asia lies in the resolution of Kashmir issue. He cautioned both the countries not to confuse resolution of Kashmir with the trivial issues like trade and commerce. “This kind of approach in talks is going to take us nowhere” warned Mir. Referring to the confidence building measures (CBMs) Mir said much hyped had been created about the confidence building measures in Kashmir but it miserably failed to bring about a change in the ground situation. The gape of alienation continues to remain unabridged as the lack of trust and confidence in the environment continues to persist. Referring to the several incidents human rights violations Mr. Mir said Human rights situation across the state continues to deteriorate in spite of Prime Minister’s assurance of zero tolerance towards human rights violations. Fake encounters, custodial killings and enforced disappearances have become an order of the day. He said this all is happening in the presence of draconian laws like Special Powers to Armed Forces Act and Disturbed Area Act. Stressing upon the trilateral nature of the Kashmir dispute Mr. Mir said Talks between the two countries would be a futile exercise unless People of the deputed state of Jammu and Kashmir are involved in the decision making process. He said people of the state should not feel deceived after their supreme sacrifices made during past several decades. He said to end the cycle of violence dialogue process needs to be taken forward. |
