Cold wave continues in Kashmir, Western Disturbances active in region | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Apr 12 : The Western Disturbances (WD) are still active in the region causing fresh snowfall on the upper reaches and rains in plains, resulting in further drop in the temperature in the Kashmir Valley. The WD, originating in the Arabian sea, are active in the region which could cause more snowfall on high altitudes and rain in plains during the next 24 hours, a Met department spokesman said. After a normal minimum temperature, people again woke up to a cloudy sky this morning in the summer capital, Srinagar. The spokesman said despite 6.7 mm rainfall since last evening till 0800 hrs, Srinagar recorded 7.5 degrees minimum temperature this morning. Majority roads in the city were damaged, making the traffic movement difficult. Several roads in the city and outskirts remained waterlogged due to poor drainage system. Gulmarg, a ski resort in north Kashmir, remained coldest in the valley after the minimum was recorded at minus 1.7 degrees, a slight drop against yesterday when it was minus 1.5 degree. Minus temperature has resulted in less melting of snow on the slopes, thus extending skiing season. Hundreds of skiers and tourists are arriving at Gulmarg, about 55 km from here everyday. There was also three degrees drop in the minimum temperature at health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir. Against yesterdays 3 degrees, it was 0.4 degree minimum temperature this morning following about 40 mm rainfall. Qazigund a south Kashmir town on Srinagar-Jammu highway recorded highest 45.8 mm rainfall till 0800 hrs this morning. However, the 300-km-long, life line to Kashmir was through from both sides. Kokernag experienced about 39 mm rainfall. A border town on Srinagar-Leh national highway was however, coldest in the region with minus 2 degree while Leh recorded 1.2 degree minimum temperature.
