Give minority status to non-migrant pandits in Kashmir: HWSK | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Apr 12 : Demanding minority status to non-migrant Kashmiri pandits, the Hindu Welfare Society of Kashmir (HWSK) today urged the government to pass the much delayed Shrine Bill so that temples and other properties were protected from vested interests. In a statement issued on the occasion of Ram Navami at Ramji temple, Barbarshah near here, president of the HWSK A K Rajpori said despite odds, hundreds of Kashmiri pandit families did not migrate and remained in the Valley when members of their community left for other parts of the country in early 90s.
"We hope things will improve," he said adding devotees who had come from different parts of the Valley joined the 'havan' and prayed for peace and prosperity in the state. Rajpori regretted that despite assurances and promises by the government, nothing was done for welfare of the pandits who were residing in the Valley. He said "there are 450 unemployed youths in the community who had completed their education. We demand a special employment package for these youths". He also demanded that 64 families, dislocated during turmoil, be provided temporary accommodations at Sheikhpora and Mattan quarters till they get their permanent settlement. Rajpori said non-Kashmiri pandits should be granted minority status. He criticised the government for not passing the Shrine Bill during recent Assembly session in Jammu. He alleged that shrines and other temples were encroached upon by miscreants. To restore them, it was necessary to pass the Shrine Bill, he said and demanded that non-migrant pandits also be associated with the protection of shrines and temples in the Valley.
