Mutton shortage saves Valley Rs 1.60 Cr | | | Early Times report Jammu, April 12: The on-going strike by Valley’s wholesale mutton dealers has proved a blessing in disguise for the people. The `voracious meat eater Valley’ saves Rs 16000000 on account of the strike that has now entered fifteenth day. A mutton dealer, Mairaj-ud-Din Dajoo told Early Times that forty trucks carrying 200 sheep each enter the Valley every day. “If the average cost of a single sheep is fixed around Rs 2000, it means the Valley saves Rs 16000000 daily”, he said. An animal husbandry officer confirms Dajoo’s claims. “Yes, around forty trucks loaded with sheep enter the Valley daily. In addition the department also supplies mutton”, he said. Kashmiris are voracious meat eaters. The local production of sheep is microscopic. The bulk of the animals are bought at Delhi and elsewhere. The wholesale dealers are on strike for the past fifteen days. According to reports, they have been urging the government to increase the price of mutton. Before the strike commenced, the retailers would sell mutton for Rs 240 to 250 a kg. They want Rs 270 for every kilogram of meat. The government has so far resisted the demand. Meanwhile, a Delhi based Mutton Dealers Union has assured supply of mutton at the rate of Rs 200 per kilogram. The union has accused the local dealers of maligning the Delhi traders. “The Valley dealers are not only looting their own people but maligning us as well”, the Union said. The local dealers today responded through paid advertisements stating that the `so-called’ Delhi Union was misleading the government and the general public.
