Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 12: After a marathon of political exercises which continued till late this evening, the political parties are headed for 'final showdown' tomorrow for what can be aptly called as battle of ballot for the six seats of Upper House in J&K. In contrast to a comparative comfortable permutations and combinations in Kashmir, it is Jammu this time again which strains the nerves of almost all the parties having strong stakes in the polls tomorrow. Apprehensions of cross voting coupled with the probability of all opposition parties 'joining hands' is the major worry for ruling NC and Congress, things being more strenuous for latter.
In the meeting of coalition partners on Tuesday evening the leadership of both Congress and National Conference 'parroted' the rhetoric of 'unity mantra' as the key for success of coalition in the polls being held tomorrow. Sources said both Chief Minister Omar Abdullah as well as PCC chief Prof Saif-u-Din Soz exhorted the members to 'exhibit' unity at all costs to ensure victory of all the five coalition candidates. Contending the need for united approach with assertion, both the leaders said since LC polls had become prestige point, it was imperative for both Congress and NC members to 'save' the prestige and honour of the ruling partners , sources said , adding the undertone of the exhortation was the members need to 'forget' smaller differences for this vital occasion.
Sources said in a bid to convince and comfort the members from both sides, the leadership of both the parties also underlined the need for united and harmonious approach while polls in accordance with respective whips, more importantly for running the coalition smoothly. "We have exhibited complete harmony earlier on many occasions and we have to prove it again tomorrow", the leaders are said to have asserted in the meeting. In the backdrop of apprehensions of cross voting, the leaders of both the parties are said to conveyed that though some activity was going on and attempts were being to build 'atmosphere' in that direction, but coalition would not 'fall' in any trap as it did not believe in 'horse trading'.
The meeting was attended by almost all the members barring forest minister Mian Altaf , senior Congress leader Choudhary Mohammad Aslam and NC leader Rashpal Singh. Abdul Manan Ansari Secertary AICC also attended the meeting of coalition allies today. Besides independent members Hakim Mohammad Yasin, Ghulam Hasan Mir, Charanjit Singh and Ashwani Kumar also attended the meeting. However, one more independent MLA from Kashmir Engineer Rashid remained absent as he has already conveyed that he would stay away from the polls tomorrow.
In so far as the issuance of formal whip is concerned, the coalition partners will converge once again ahead of commencement of polls tomorrow on breakfast at Chief Minister's residence where they would be explained the pattern of priorities and preference of votes, a technical aspect very vital for voting of members. Chief Whip National Conference, Mubark Gul, however, issued the Whip late this evening asking the Members of his party to cast their votes in favour of coalition candidates for Legislative Council polls scheduled to be held tomorrow.
As for the final show down, apart from the votes of their own members both the partners are heavily banking on the votes of the independent members, the political scene and scenario being 'keen', where tussle on at least one Jammu seat is very tough.
