AG XI retains CGEWCC cricket trophy

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, April 13: Accountant General (AG) XI clinched fifth consecutive cricket title in the ongoing Sports Meet of the Central Government Employees Welfare Coordination Committee (CGEWCC), here today.
In the final of the Twenty20 event, played at MA Stadium here, AG XI trounced Northern Railways (NR) XI by 13 runs in a closely contested game.
Earlier, batting first, after winning the toss, the star studded side of AG XI set a target of 121 runs for the loss of six wickets, which, in reply, NR XI could not chase and exhausted their quota of 20 overs for 107 runs losing nine wickets in the process.
Playing with four first class cricketers, including two former J&K skippers, Ashwani Gupta and Sanjay Sharma, AG XI made a good start and played confident innings thereby brining the total to 120 for six.
Ranjit Bali was top scorer with 40 runs made with the help of five hits to the fence while Ashwani Gupta and Sanjay contributed 22 (3x4) and 24 (2x4) runs respectively. Rajan Singh added valuable 11 runs. From NR XI, Sanjeev and Parshotam took two wickets each while Ripan and Jasmeet shared apiece each.
Later, chasing the target, NR XI made great efforts but could not do well in the final four overs of their innings. The side fell short of 13 runs to the required total with one wicket in hand.
Sanjeev and Rinku played fine innings of 26 and 25 runs respectively, while Parshotam contributed 19 runs hitting two boundaries. Though Ashwani Gupta could not take any wicket, Om Parkash and Anup Magotra claimed two each.
Today’s final was officiated by Shashi Jamwal and P S Jamwal as umpires while Surinder Mohan and Mahesh (NSSO) were scorers.
Earlier, before start of the final, special guests, Divisional Traffic Manager (DTM) Northern Railway, GB Singh and Deputy Account General, YJ Dassi were introduced with the finalist teams. They also witnessed first five overs of the game.
