Early Times Report
Jammu,April 13:-Will the people in the valley of Kashmir, especially the restive youth, respond to Prime Minister,Manmohan Singh's plan of utilising central funds on construction of stadium and training camps for them for remaining engaged in various sports, including cricket, football, wrestling, hockey ?Well peoples ‘response depends on the political and security scenario in the valley.
You cannot expect youth to remain engaged in playing cricket or football or hockey while their comrades or their parents and cousins and friends are fighting against unemployment, poverty, injustice, excesses by the security forces etc.
During the last 20 years the sports activities in the Kashmir valley have been grounded with the result teenagers are seen playing cricket in the streets and lanes when the infrastructure has either been missing or has been demolished or some grounds have remained under the occupation of the security forces.
Under the Prime Minister's package an indoor football stadium will be constructed in Srinagar where players can play football or even cricket under the floodlights. So far the Union Ministry of Sports has identified three sports favourable to the Kashmiri youth and they are football, cricket and boxing.Under the plan stadii and the boxing rings are to be set up in each district where former ace players in various fields would train them.As far as cricket is concerned the services of Kapil Dev Mohd.Azharuddin and Bishen Singh Bedi will be secured for imparting training to the youngsters in Kashmir.
The idea behind this exercise is to keep the youth in Kashmir engaged in sports till required facilities were developed for resolving the problem of unemployment.A team of security experts and political analysts have opined that civilian strife, the one that the valley witnessed during the summer season last year,is generally the outcome of many problems that the youth face.
They have stated that the Kashmiri youth need to be pulled out of drab life, isolation, frustration and that can be done by promoting in them interest for sports activities. Over the years the youth in kashmir have been gripped by a psychological problem which is the outcome of their indolence."An idle man's brain is a devil's workshop" and this is what the security and political uncertainty have made people in Kashmir.
Experts have suggested to the Government that the only way open for the youth to rationalise their frustration was through tough physical exercise which can be done by playing cricket, football, boxing.
If the Union Ministry for sports is keen to divert Kashmiri peoples ‘attention from violence to constructive activities it should set up all-weather stadium not only in Srinagar but in other district headquarters. It is required because Kashmir has simply three to five months period when people can play different outdoor games.
It would help in changing the outlook of the youth if groups of them are taken on country wide tour for interacting with prominent sportsmen and women.(eom)
