New Delhi squandering the advantage | Indo-Pak Relations -- I | | STARK REALITY RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 13: On April 10, Panun Kashmir (PK), a frontline organization of the internally displaced Kashmiri Hindus, organized a seminar on “Indo-Pak Engagement: Squandering the Advantage”. The theme was appropriate and time highly opportune. The speakers, without any exception, hit the nail on the head, accused New Delhi of following a weak-kneed policy towards Pakistan and the Kashmiri separatists and urged New Delhi to make optimum use of the prevailing situation at the international level to protect and promote its paramount geo-political interests. Everyone was of the firm view that the political situation in the United States; turmoil in the Middle East; unrest in the whole of the Arab world; the ongoing very strong movement in most of the European countries, including France, Poland, Switzerland, Greece, Italy/Rome against a particular school of thought; the internal situation in Pakistan; and the prevailing situation in the otherwise militant-infested Kashmir Valley suit New Delhi and it was disgusting that the policy-planners in New Delhi had, instead of taking advantage of the situation, had only “squandered the opportunity.” The fact of the matter is that all the speakers expressed their “dismay about the approach of government of India in dealing with Pakistan.” They catalogued the “flip flops of the Government of India in dealing with Pakistan” and attacked New Delhi for the same. Besides, they raised “doubts about the actual motivations behind the re-initiation of dialogue with Pakistan.” What they said did make a sense and demonstrated that there are persons in the state who know what is happening across the world and what are the implications of what has been happening as far as Jammu and Kashmir was concerned. Speaking on the occasion Dipankar Sengupta, Professor of Economics, University of Jammu, said: “The story of Indo-Pak talks is a story of losing track in parallel tracks of dialogue. It is now a matter of record as to how both the Government of India as well as the Indian side of parallel diplomacy have never been able to seize initiative or set any agenda during such talks with Pakistan. India has always been on defensive and seems to be only reacting to what Pakistan and Pakistanis say and do.” Ajay Chrungoo, an activist and chairman of the PK, said: It would be a great mistake to attribute the flip-flops of the Government of India to lack of diplomatic skills or a proper perspective…The Government of India has a definite perspective while dealing with Pakistan and that perspective unfortunately can be only termed as against the vital interests of India.” “The Government of India seems to have embarked on a mission of crafting a retreat from Jammu and Kashmir and that is what guides it in its dealings with Pakistan,” he said. He also said: “In a situation where Pakistan is in a state of internal disarray and the Anglo-American block is busy in Middle-East to salvage its relations in the region, the Government of India embarking on an unconditional dialogue with Pakistan on Pakistan’s terms can be explained only as a policy of self-laceration.” He further said: “It seems protecting Pakistan and bailing out separatists is the policy objective which government of India is pursuing. Such a situation happens only when the leadership is deeply alienated from the national perspectives...The attitude of Government of India is serving as a crucial support structure for the separatist campaign. We are witnessing the recasting of concepts of borders, sovereignty and secularism…(It is the fundamental duty of every devout Indian) to sensitize (himself) to the internal insults to national unity and prepare for protracted struggle to defeat the designs to break up the country.” (To be continued)
