Cross Voting by 7 BJP MLAs , coalition ‘bags’ 5 seats, one goes to PDP
NC, Cong celebrate ‘cohesion’ in coalition, say victory would cement ties

Jammu, April 13: In what can be seen as one more ‘peculiar’ instance of horse trading substantiating the cliché of ‘ strange bed fellows in politics’, the results of Legislative Council polls sprung a huge surprise with ‘give and take’ of votes not only between the rivals but also the parties which are ideologically poles apart . Opposition BJP indulged in brazen , rather naked cross voting as only four out of its 11 votes were cast in favour of the party candidate on Jammu seat whereas the rest 7 were apparently ‘shared’ by the ruling alliance partners- National Conference and Congress. Ruling coalition registered victory on five seats, three to NC and two to Congress whereas one seat was won by PDP.
The ‘unusual and unexpected’ outcome of the result was seen on the two Jammu seats where NC and Congress ‘managed’ to get equal number of votes for their candidates 30 each for Master Noorul Hassan (NC) and Yashpal Khajuria (Congress), both of whom were declared elected. While PDP bagged the expected strength 24 in favour of its candidate Bharat Bhushan on Jammu seat, only four votes were cast in favour of Thakur Ranjit Singh of BJP by its own party of 11 members. The coalition partners who were already apprehensive of some ‘trouble’ from within, eventually emerged ‘successful’ in the final outcome of result as BJP visibly ensured ‘smooth sailing’ of both the candidates belonging to their rival parties. Out of 24 cast in favour of PDP on Jammu seat was however rejected as invalid for technical reasons. In all 88 votes were polled on Jammu seat out of total strength of 89, Engineer Rashid having abstained from voting.
As for the Kashmir seat, the voting pattern remained comparatively normal with ruling NC registering victory on two seats for Dr Bashir Veeri and Dharam Bir Singh by securing 26 votes each from the coalition and allies. PDP candidate Ashraf Mir who got 25 votes was also declared successful. A small aberration in the outcome was seen in the fact that 10 votes were cast in favour of BJP candidate Mohammad Maqbool War (out of 11) and it was PDP which received one extra vote than its original strength( inclusive of support of three). In all 87 votes were polled for three Kashmir seats, as apart from Engineer Rashid one more member abstained from voting.
A comparative simple arithmetic on Poonch seat, it was a smooth win for Congress candidate Jehangir mir who secured 52 votes of the coalition partners and allies. Interestingly, BJP candidate on this seat Satish Kumar secured all the 11 votes from the party MLAs besides one more vote, apparently of lone JSM MLA, even as one vote cast in his favour was rejected. And the Pathers Party candidate Mohammad Saleem secured 24 votes ( three from own party and 21 of PDP as per the electoral understanding). In all 88 votes were polled on this seat as well.
Secretary J&K Legilsative Assembly Mohammad Ramzan who was the returning officer for the polls confired the figures of votes polled in favour of the parties and said elections were conducted in a smooth and transparent manner with no complaints from any quarter,

An upbeat and jubilated alliance partners described their success as victory of coalition reflecting complete cohesion which will further cement the ties between the two. President JKPCC & former Union Minister Prof. Saifuddin Soz-MP described it a victory of the Congress party and the coalition. He expressed satisfaction over what he said entire party and legislature party unitedly worked for the success of the party candidates as well as coalition, as a result all candidates of the coalition emerged successful. He also thanked allies for their support. Earlier, victory processions were taken out in the Assembly complex followed by warm reception accorded to the newly elected members legislative council on their arrival at the PCC Headquarters.
Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah said that the victory of all coalition candidates in
Legislative Council elections vindicates the cohesion and unity between National Conference and Congress.
“Both the parties are on same page and complement each other in translating the pledge of Khushaal Jammu and Kashmir in reality”, he said and asserted that the coalition would get further strengthened with the passage of time.
The Chief Minister was speaking at an informal meeting of National Conference and Congress stalwarts and winning candidates of the coalition partners in the Government here soon after announcement of the results.
Pradesh Congress President, Prof. Saif-ud-Din Soz, Deputy Chief Minister, Tara Chand, Central Congress Observer, Abdul Manan Ansari, various Ministers, Advisors to the Chief Minister, Parliament Members, legislators and others were present in the meeting.
