Reverberating dhols, bhangra, feasts marks Baisakhi | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu , Apr 14 (: Baisakhi was today celebrated in Jammu Kashmir with religious fervour and gaiety. Far away from the fertile fields of their home state where Baisakhi heralds the harvest season, BSF and Army jawans on Thursday celebrated the festival here with villagers with religious fervour and traditional gaiety. The jawans danced to the tunes of Punjabi music and beats of dholaks with villagers in Suchetgarh, Ramgarh, Octroi, Banglard, Laam and Chakan-Da-Bagh along the Indo-Pak border.Sikh jawans displayed skills of art of weapons, including swords. Meanwhile, fairs were organised at Reasi Gurudwara, Nangli Sahab in Poonch, Gurudwara Talab Tillo, Nanak Nagar, banks of river Chenab and Tawi. Gurudwaras across the region wore a festive look. Thousands of people thronged gurudwaras to offer prayers.
The day also marked the opening of Mughal gardens on the bank of famed Dal Lake, after harsh winter months.
The day is very auspicious for the Sikh community due to it significance in the glorious history of Sikhism, as on this day in 1699, the Tenth Guru of Sikhs Guru Gobind Singh founded the 'Order of Khalsa' to preserve human and secular values.
Wearing colourful dress, the members of the Sikh community, including women and children, were seen visting Gurdwara since early this morning.
National Secular Forum, R.S.Pura Unit organized a programmed and celebrated Baisakhi with Jawans of 35th Battalion BSF, Who come from different parts of the country, at Octroi Post in RS Pura sector. Neeraj Rao Dy. Commandant 35th Battalion BSF was the Chief Guest, Vikas Sharma State President NSF presided over the function; Choudhary Swarn Singh was the Special guest, S.K.Upadhaya Assistant Commandant, and Surjit Choudhary District Chairman, were the guest of honour. Speaking on the occasion Neeraj Rao Dy. Commandant appreciated the efforts of NSF members to come forwarded and organized these function. He expressed hope that such a function is a reflection of centuries old traditional communal harmony and brotherhood among different sections and faiths of the society. Baisakhi festival is celebrated as the Sikh New Year and the founding of the khalsa Panth. History of Baisakhi traces its origin from the Baisakhi day celebration of 1699 organized by the tenth Sikh guru, Guru Gobind Singh to form Khalsa- Brotherhood of Saint soldiers to fight against tyranny and oppression.
