JAMMU, Apr 14: Hats off to the Kashmiri leaders, both separatist and the so-called mainstream. Hats off because they act as one man; because they, unlike the divided and confused Jammu leadership, work in unison; because they, unlike the Jammu leadership, take no time in making common cause with one another; because their attitude towards the Dogras of Jammu and the country as a whole is identical; and because none of them ever wishes to lag behind.
Each and every Kashmiri leader sings the same song; each and every Kashmiri leader opposes what the Dogras of Jammu stand for; and each and every Kashmiri leaders abhors the Indian Constitution and demands a system outside the constitutional framework of India. And, don’t forget, each and every Kashmiri leader calls himself secular, democratic and liberal and each and every Kashmiri leader dismissed those seek empowerment in Jammu or those seek the state’s full merger with India as communal, parochial, narrow-minded, fundamentalist, short-sighted, medievalist and anti-Kashmir.
And, why not? After all, New Delhi is with the Kashmiri leadership; the Prime Minister is with them; the Union Home Minister is with them; the External Affairs Minister is with them and the UPA chairperson and the Congress are also with them. It is obvious that they are with the Kashmiri leaders because the latter are secular, liberal, democratic, reasonable and what not.
What the NC president and Union Minister for Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah said about the Dogra certificate issue the other day needs to viewed in this context. I fact, he has asked the State Government - headed by his son Omar Abdullah - to tread cautiously as far as issue of Dogra certificate is concerned and remove loopholes, if any. "If the sense of discrimination prevails in any section of the society regarding the issuance of the certificate, it may result in disturbance of peace and tranquility in the state. So, the State Government should seriously consider reviewing the order and address these misgivings," he told reporters on April 12 on the sidelines of a function held on the eve of Ramnavmi at Achabal in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
To be more precise, Farooq Abdullah had jumped on to the Geelani’s bandwagon as a true and genuine Kashmiri leader. He should be hailed, not condemned. The Kashmiri leaders never commit a wrong. Farooq Abdullah also doesn’t commit any wrong. And, how could one interpret the opposition in Kashmir to the order relating to the issuance of Dogra certificates as anti-Dogra? For, Farooq, like Geelani and Mirwaiz, is absolutely right. That’s the reason the Jammu-based legislators belonging to the BJP and the Panthers Party voted for the NC, the PDP and the Congress candidates during the April 13 Legislative Council elections and either defeated their own candidates or made them to withdraw from the contest.
It must remain a matter of shame for the so-called Jammu leadership. Now it is for the Dogras of Jammu province to fight for and protect their cause. They just can’t afford to pin their faith in their leadership anymore. To pin their faith in the Jammu leadership would be commit a suicide.
