Government mulling to develop new tourist circuit in Akhnoor: Sham | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, April 15: As a part of 3-day Baisakhi celebrations across the State, an impressive Mela was organized at Akhnoor by the tourism department in collaboration with SDM, Akhnoor. Minister for Health, Horticulture & Floriculture Sham Lal Sharma was the chief guest on the occasion. The Mela was held at Jia Potha Ghat on the right bank of river Chenab as per practice. The main attractions of the Mela were Dogra folk dance, cultural bonanza by the artists of Jackson Group depicting Dogra culture, songs and Sandhya Aarti (evening prayer) of river Chenab performed at the historic site of Maharaja Gulab Singh statue. Speaking on the occasion, Sham Lal Sharma said that Government is committed to create better tourism infrastructure in Akhnoor to woo tourists from across the country in view of its historical background. He said that Government has already drawn up a comprehensive plan for the development of Akhnoor town to facilitate pilgrim tourists, adding that some new sites have been identified, which would be included in the new tourist circuit to divert the tourists of Mata Vaishno Devi via Shiv Khori-Dori Dager-Sumah. He said that Government is also mulling to construct a Jhoola bridge at Akhnoor on the pattern of Laxman Jhoola, Haridwar for the facilities of tourists. Sham said that after the discovery of Buddhist site at village Ambaran, the Akhnoor town is emerging as a center of heritage tourism attraction. Many historians are showing great interest about the wonder town and have engaged themselves in research work. Vijay Kranti, a photo journalist displayed his research work at an exhibition held at Ashoka Hotel, New Delhi recently which was witnessed by a galaxy of people including Tibetan Guru Dalai Lama.
