J&K govt committed to upgrade slum area: Bhalla

JAMMU, Apr 15: Minister for Revenue Raman Bhalla has said that government is making all out efforts to improve living standard of urban slum population of the state by providing drinking water, electricity, health, education and road connectivity besides better lanes and drains facilities in these colonies.
He added that financial assistance is also being provided to houseless families under Indira Awas Yojna (IAY) for construction of houses. This was stated by the Minister while interacting with locals after assessing the development related problems of the residents of Kaccha Talab in Bahu Fort area, here today.
Bhalla said that dream of the UPA and state government is to remove poverty from every nook and corner of the state by launching several centrally sponsored schemes. He said that under Jawahar Lal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission and IAY, UPA government has provided liberal funding for upgrading the living standard of the poor sections of the society.
He hoped the people will cooperate with executing agencies in effective implementation of development works in their basties. Responding to the locals demand, the Minister asked the Jammu Municipal Corporation to start the works for upgradation of lanes, drains with grating facilities by using quality material in Kaccha Talab in Bahu Fort adding that Government has earmarked Rs. 4 lakh for this purpose.
He asked the people to protect public property in their respective areas adding that ‘it is the duty of every resident to make the area neat and clean. He said unhygienic area not only creating irritation among the inhabitants but also affected on health. Bhalla said that government has earmarked Rs. 12 lakh for construction of lane by fixing inter-lock tiles at Rabi Dass Basti in Bahu Fort.
He said this while inspecting the ongoing works of lanes and asked the executing agency to complete it within 15 days for the benefit of locals. Bhalla informed that government has sanctioned Rs. 75 lakh for construction of play field near Government Higher Secondary School Bahu Fort adding that on the completion the locals could celebrate their national festivals besides sports activities at their doorsteps stadium.
He said that government has earmarked Rs. 55 lakh for construction of cremation ground near Kalika Colony on the right bank of river Tawi. He said that government has sanctioned Rs. 3.5 crore for developing the river Tawi embankments near Peer Khoo temple which include construction of parks, tourist reception centre, artificial lake adding that Rs. 90 lakh have been kept for construction of view points and road widening from Bahu Fort to Harki Poudi temple.
