| J&K villagers nab Pakistani LeT militant | | |
Kupwara, Nov 16
A Pakistani militant of Lashker-e-Toiba outfit was nabbed by villagers and handed over to the police in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Saqib Aziz Malik, a resident of Multan, was caught by the villagers of Awoora who handed him over to the Kupwara police station, District Senior Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar said.
He said the militant had escaped during an encounter with the security forces at Cherwari village of Gulgam, in which three of his associates were killed.
The ultra reached Awoora in search of shelter but was held by the residents of the village.
Militant struggle
Malik is the third Pakistani militant to be caught by locals and handed over to security forces since the eruption of militancy in the state in early 1990s.
A family in Charar-e-Sharief locked a Pakistani militant commander of erstwhile Harkat-ul-Ansar Abu Jindal in 1995 while he was fleeing after an encounter and informed the army.
However, all the three male members of the family were gunned down by ultras in 2003.
In 2004, another Pakistani militant was handed over to the army by an auto-rickshaw driver when he was fleeing after a suicide attack at Indra Nagar locality of the high-security Badamibagh cantonment.
The driver was also killed by militants last month. |
