LC cross-voting: What a fall in saffron brigade which claims to stand for dignity, self-respect, loyality! | | | BHARAT BHUSHAN
JAMMU, Apr 15: What a fall in the saffron brigade which claims to stand for distinctive features of dignity, self-respect and loyality. The April 13 J&K legislative council polls, in which seven BJP MLAs defected in favour of the candidates of ruling NC-Congress combine, has put a blot on its escutcheon. Those, who did not follow the party whip and defected, have undoubtedly brought a disgrace to the party, which had for the first time raised its tally to 11 in state assembly, riding on the Amarnath land agitation wave. While NC was vocal in opposing the allotment of land to raise temporary structures for Amarnath pilgrims in Kashmir, Congress had come under severe criticism for its nearly "anti-agitation" role. Even Gulam Nabi Azad, who was then the state chief minister, had resigned and left for New Delhi to keep himself away from the land controversy. In the assembly polls held after the land row, majority of the 11 BJP MLAs had won because of the party's active role in the agitation. People voted them to victory because they felt it was only BJP which could give them true representation and fight against discrimination with Jammu region at the hands of successive state governments. But the alleged "vote-for-cash" drama in the April 13 LC polls proved people wrong as seven BJP MLAs sold their votes for vested interests. Taking a strong notice of the sell out, BJP national president Nitin Gadkari summoned all 11 party MLAs to New Delhi for a meeting to weed out the black sheep. Their resignations were taken by the party high-command Thursday last. The party is pained by their conduct which has brought disgrace to it and its voters. Go to any BJP-represented assembly segment here and you will find hosts of people who have now turned party's foes. They feel cheated at the hands of BJP MLAs, who became allies of NC and Congress candidates in the LC polls. How could people forgive them? And, why should they? The erring BJP MLAs could not be pardoned for selling people's votes. They made democracy lose its flavour for monetary considerations. People feel that because of them, democracy was trodden in the state under the heavy boots of money-power. By cross-voting in favour of their arch-rivals, they definitely made the party lose its public face. Gadkari has every right to punish them for indulging in anti-party activities. A disciplinary action was warranted to stop such unholy liaisons in future. BJP and NC-Congress combine are poles apart. They have nothing in common and are far from reaching an agreement, or a compromise over their ideologies. While NC stands for Greater Autonomy to the state, BJP opposes it tooth and nail and represents the sentiments of Jammu region in this regard. Also, from its very inception, the party has basic ideological differences with Congress which has always dubbed BJP "communal". Now, their unholy combination in LC polls has made BJP supporters upset. It is known to all in state's political circles that some BJP MLAs have proximity to NC. It is being felt now that it was this set of MLAs who violated party whip to ensure the win of the candidates of the coalition partners. The considerations could be very enticing but the curtain of secrecy was never going to be lifted as a secret-ballot system was in practice in the state. Two members of this group -- Choudhary Piara Singh and Prem Lal -- had resigned from the party nearly a decade back and joined NC. The others, who did not resign, have from time to time proved their loyality with NC. Though Singh and Prem later returned to the party fold, they never became so powerful as they used to be earlier.Panthers Party also took people by surprise by voting in favour of PDP, mainly known for its Kashmir-centric and anti-Jammu stance. In statements often issued to the press, the party always opposed the PDP policies. Ideologically, the two are widely separated and have nothing in common. By highlighting the issues of discrimination with Jammu region from time to time, Panthers Party has also tried to differentiate itself from the parties like BJP. It would now be difficult for it to justify why it sided with PDP, which had not been able to create a considerable vote bank in Jammu, mainly because its ideology was not acceptable to the people on this side of the tunnel.
