4 lakh persons directly connected with trade | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, April 16: The Divisional Commissioner Dr. Asgar Hasan Samoon today convened a meeting of mutton dealers, civil society representatives, and civil officials, to discuss and review the stalemate on mutton prices. The meeting was held at Divisional commissioner’s office in Srinagar. The Divisional commissioner said that the government is adamant on resolving this issue. “We cannot wait and watch as mutton is not a luxury item but an essential commodity in Kashmir.” He urged the dealers to come forward immediately as people particularly needy are facing huge inconvenience due to unavailability of mutton. The mutton dealers put forth their grievances before the Divisional commissioner for their immediate redressal. The Government asked the dealers to resolve their issues by Thursday, 21st April, when the next meeting is scheduled to take place. The Divisional Commissioner also appealed the mutton dealers to ensure the availability of mutton for patients and needy until this issue is resolved. The Divisional Commissioner informed in the meeting that a slaughter house at a cost of 40crore rupees is coming up at Tengpora, Srinagar. It’s pertinent to mention here that more than 4 lakh people are associated with the mutton trade and the wholesalers make a profit of around 20,000 rupees per truck of sheep imported into the valley. As many as 30 truck loaded of sheep are imported per day in the valley. The meeting was attended by Director CAPD A W Tak, Director Sheep Husbandry Dr.B R Kotwal, Director Animal Husbandry Dr. M A Chisti, Manzoor Ahmed Kangoo President Kothdar Association and President Retail Mutton Dealers Association Khazir Mohd. Regoo among others.
