| Cross-Voting: Seeking fresh mandate the only alternative | | Legislative Council Elections | | Rustam JAMMU, Apr 16: The BJP national president, Nitin Gadkari, has summoned the state BJP president, Shamsher Singh Manhas, against whose integrity fingers have also been raised, along with all the 11 party legislators, to Delhi to explain their conduct and the circumstances under which the 7 MLAs crossed votes or voted for the Congress, the NC and the PDP. A report suggests that the shameless erring BJP MLAs, who murdered democracy and violated the people's mandate and the party whip, are least concerned with the public opinion and that while three of them - Lal Chand (Bani), Durga Das (Hiran Nagar) and Baldev Sharma (Reasi) have justified cross-voting, one of the legislators Jagdish Raj Spolia (Basohli) has asked the party high command to forgive the murderers of democracy. These erring MLAs have, according to trustworthy sources within the party, told the three central BJP leaders they committed no wrong by indulging in cross-voting and that why did not the high command take action against those who had crossed votes during the 2009 Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council elections in the state in 2009? The same report suggests that Shamsher Singh Manhas's conduct was also not above board and that he was prepared to facilitate cross-voting in lieu of "Rs one crore." According to the said report, he had demanded Rs one crore" obviously from someone who had been charged with the responsibility of causing horse trading or bribing the purchasable BJP MLAs. Not just this, the said report also said that one Congress cabinet minister, one NC MLC and the BJP MLA's son worked in unison to brought off a coup against the system or pollute the whole electoral exercise. "Three crores of rupees" changed hands, the report has said, and added that the coup was brought off towards the end of March and the bribe money was paid at the beginning of April. Thus, everything is in public domain. Leave alone what the Chief Minister on Friday said about the unholy drama that was enacted on April 13 both by the BJP and those who greased the palms of the BJP MLAs. Omar Abdullah asserted yesterday that the whole electoral exercise was fair; that no bribe was given; and that his government would quit in case the charges of bribery are proved. It is astounding that the executive head of the state has adopted this line. Anyway, it is now almost clear as to who voted for whom, who ditched their own party candidate and who voted for the NC, the Congress and the PDP against whom the BJP at the state level and at the national level had unleashed a relentless campaign to tell the people that these parties were not just anti-Jammu but also "anti-national." The BJP had all along sought to paint these parties black on the ground that they had been working since long for a political system that was outside the constitutional framework of India and that all of them were "separatist and militant-friendly." What can restore the people's confidence in the system? What should the BJP national president do to salvage the position and win over the people's confidence? A radical change in the People's Representation Act alone could restore the people's confidence in the system. Similarly, it is imperative on the part of the BJP high command to accept moral and political responsibility, accept the resignation of all the 11 BJP MLAs and ask them to seek a fresh mandate. The BJP constituency in the state will not accept anything short of this. It's a difficult time for the central BJP leadership. It has to take a tough stand. For, what the BJP has done in the state has serious implications. Seeking fresh mandate is the only alternative available. |
