Yoga sessions for stressed soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir
11/16/2006 11:11:37 PM

JAMMU: Nov 16
Rattled by an increase in fratricidal killings, the Army has trained a group of instructors in yoga at Swami Ramdev's Institute for conducting special sessions with soldiers posted in Jammu and Kashmir to bring down their stress levels.
"In order to hold regular yoga and psychology camps in all formations in the state to bring down levels of stress, the Army instructors were trained by the Swami Ramdev Yoga Institute recently," a top Army official told PTI.
He said a core group of around 20 demonstrators and instructors, drawn from different formations, were recently trained by a team from the institute at 16 corps.
They will hold anti-stress camps in units and brigades across Kashmir, the official said.
A high-level team of psychologists has also trained Army psychologists at 16 corps headquarters to deal with fratricidal killings among personnel, officials said.
"This has been done in view of the killing of colleagues by jawans in incidents in the 16 corps area caused by a high degree of stress," an official said.
There were five such incidents in Rajouri and Srinagar districts of the state in which 11 personnel, including a Lieutenant Colonel, were killed in October alone.

"Special psychological council cells will also be formed in field formations at the brigade, division and corps levels to focus on lowering stress levels among soldiers in militancy -hit zones and arresting the trend," the official said.

A network of such cells, some of which are being tested, will play a multi-agency role for affected soldiers, he said.

At least 30 such cells will be set up under the operational area of the northern command, which looks after Jammu and Kashmir, he said.

Over 40 counsellors are to be appointed in the northern command and Kolkata-based eastern command, which looks after the insurgency hit north-eastern states.

Besides providing psychological counselling, the cells will have state-of-the-art yoga, mediation, gaming and other recreational facilities, officials said.
