Two proclaimed offenders held | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 17: Two proclaimed offenders, who were evading arrest for the past 14 years, were arrested by police from Bantalab area here in the wee hours of Sunday morning. They were identified as Barkat Ali, son of Habib Ullah of Gunda Dalehri in Kalakote, Rajouri, and his wife Khurshid Begum. Police sources said on June 12, 1997, Mohammad Akbar, son of Sher Mohammad of Dalheri lodged a written complaint with Dharamsal police station, alleging therein that on May 30, 1997, Barkat, Khurshid Begum and Khadim Hussain, son of Mohammad Iqbal, had forcibly taken his one buffalo and an ox. Acting on the complaint, police police had registered a case under section 382 of RPC. After the completion of all legal formalities, a challan was produced in the court of JMIC, Kalakote, on December 29, 1997. A warrant under section 512 of CrPC was later issued by the court against the accused as they did not produce themselves in the court despite repeated court warrants. They were later declared proclaimed offenders by the court. Following inputs that the accused were putting up at Bantalab here, a police team led by Kalakote police station SHO, SI Mohammad Bashir raided his house early in the morning and arrested Barkat and Khurshid Begum. However, Khadim, who lived in their neighbourhood, fled the spot. A hunt was on to nab him.41 absconders, who were wanted in different cases, had so far been apprehended by Rajouri district police, the sources added.
