STARK REALITY
RUSTAM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Apr 17: It is amusing. It is ridiculous. It is even disgusting and provocative. It is an attempt to rub salt on the Jammu wound. How could a party that betrayed its constituency in Jammu on April 13 attack the BJP that disgraced itself and also ditched its own constituency on the same black day obviously for the sake of money? How could a murderers of democracy and the one who subverted the people’s mandate and hit the people of Jammu below the belt could attack BJP or accuse the BJP of deceiving the people of Jammu province and hobnobbing with those in the Valley who have all along pursued Kashmir-centric policies to jeopardise the rights and interests of all others?
And, who is the one who has denounced and abused the BJP for its act of political debauchery committed on April 13, when seven BJP MLAs shamelessly voted for the ruling coalition and made the position of their own party candidate and the party itself quite awkward? It is none other than the chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP).
What exactly has the JKNPP chairman said while condemning the unscrupulous BJP? He has, among other things, said: “BJP has always played with the sentiments of the Jammu people and it totally stood exposed due to role of some of its MLAs during recent Legislative Council elections…The people of Jammu have been deceived. Some legislators from the party sold the interests of the people from Jammu region. They have betrayed the people and their mandate. Activities of some corrupt politicians have brought bad name to the political class, which is very unfortunate…(It is) the most shocking episode that has put the heads of entire political system to shame when the seven MLAs of the party out of 11 openly defied the so-called whip and voted for the Congress and NC candidates.”
What the JKNPP has said is absolutely correct and everyone in Jammu and elsewhere would agree with what he has said. For, the BJP has committed a crime that just cannot be condoned. It has not betrayed the people of Jammu. Actually, it has betrayed the whole of the nation by voting for outfits whose stand on Jammu and Kashmir is no different from the stand of the Kashmiri separatists. As a matter of fact, the BJP has bartered away the nation’s supreme interests. That’s the reason the people of Jammu province, cutting across party lines, have denounced the BJP leadership as a bunch of corrupt politicians, and even traitors. Even the BJP national chief spokesperson has candidly admitted that what the state unit of the BJP did on April 13 has harmed the BJP’s cause at the national level.
It is strange that the JKNPP chairman has taken on the BJP overlooking the fact that its own role during the council elections was no less dubious. It first fielded its candidate for the Jammu seat and then withdrew his candidature. It was done after a meeting between the JKNPP and the PDP leadership and it’s not a secret. That the JKNPP withdrew its candidate and voted for the PDP that stands for self-rule and that, like all other Kashmir-based and Kashmir-centric outfits, has done all that it could to render the people of Jammu province ineffective and unreal for all practical purposes should clinch the whole issue and establish that there was no material difference between the political conduct of the JKNPP and the BJP. Both have damaged the Jammu cause as well as the national cause and both will have to face the people’s wrath.
