JK’s cultural heritage to be protected for future generations: Jora

JAMMU, April 18:
Minister for Tourism and Culture, Nawang Rigzin Jora, said the Government has initiated several steps for restoration and preservation of state’s cultural heritage for future generations.
This was stated by the Minister after inaugurating a special exhibition, organized by Archives, Archeology and Museums Department to celebrate World Heritage Day at Kala Kendra, here today.
Minister said that Government has brought Legislation in the State Assembly under which a Heritage Development Authority (HDA) with the corps fund of Rs 50 crore would be set up for conservation of State’s old heritage in a scientific manner.
He said to restore the old glory of Naagar Nagar (old Srinagar city) the government has submitted a project of Rs. 50 crore to Union Ministry of Tourism for approval,.
Jora went round exhibition halls and evinced keen interest in various manuscripts, paintings on display, depicting pristine cultural heritage of the State. He instructed concerned department to organize such exhibitions and seminars in educational institutions so that students are made familiar with the State’s rich cultural heritage.
During one-day exhibition, old and rare manuscripts, historical documents, miniature paintings dating as back as 17th AD were displayed. The visitors including students, scholars, writers, prominent citizens, came in large numbers to view specimen of the centuries old hand written and printed material besides Kashmir and Jammu rare paintings of old period.
Some of the important books that attracted the visitors included Shah Nama (16THAD), Sikandar Nama (17th AD), Mahabharta (1853-AD), Ramayana in Persian of 1162-Hijri, Photo Album of marriage of Maharaja Hari Singh, proposal for constructing railway line from Jammu to Srinagar in 1900, a rare copper plate regarding Tibeto-Kashmir traders besides a big collection of photographs of miniature paintings was also on display in this exhibition.
