Srinagar-Jammu highway again put through, Leh still closed
4/18/2011 10:13:53 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Srinagar, Apr 18 : Traffic was resumed from both sides this morning on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway after the vehicles, stranded since last evening at different places, were cleared.
The highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with rest of the country, was through, a traffic police official said here today.
He said traffic movement was stopped last evening after fresh landslides at Penthal due to heavy rains.
However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, pressed into service hundreds of men and sophisticated machines to clear the landslides from the road.
All the vehicles, stranded on the highway, since last evening, were allowed to move towards their respective destinations.
Light vehicles were allowed from both Srinagar and Jammu this morning, he said adding later it was decided to allow heavy vehicles also.
Meanwhile, about half a feet of fresh snowfall hampered the snow clearance operation on national highway, connecting the Ladakhregion with the rest of the state.
About one feet of fresh snowfall was recorded at Zojila pass, linking the Ladakh region with Kashmir valley. The Centre and State governments have already approved a plan to construct a tunnel at Zojila to make it all weather road.
Roads leading to far-flung and remote areas near Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara and Bandipora districts in north Kashmir also remained closed since December 1 last year due to snowfall.
Snow clearance operation has already started on these roads to connect the cut off areas with their respective district headquarters.
Meanwhile, traffic on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road was disrupted for several hours yesterday following landslides, triggered by heavy rains in Uri.
However, the authorities pressed into service machines and men to put through the road.
