BJP MLAs to present their ‘version’ before Gadkari today | All eyes on ‘outcome’ but ‘tough’ disciplinary action unlikely……? | | Early Times Report
Jammu, April 18: With no let up in the anger and disillusionment of public in Jammu, the spree of protests and demonstrations and wide spread condemnations continue unabated against the BJP MLAs for the act of cross voting deemed betrayal with masses. Enveloped in this controversy, the legislators are all set to meet the national president Nitin Gadkari tomorrow to present their ‘version’ of the story. But the moot question remains will the party high command really act ‘tough’ and sternly against the tainted flock or resort to some ‘middle path’ as means of posturing….?
If sources are to be believed, the high command is unlikely to take any such harsh action which may cost the party all the 11 legislators simultaneously and pave way for bi elections on their constituencies. Sources said even though the central leadership right from day one of the controversy which took the state unit by storm , has been assertive on some kind of ‘tough’ disciplinary action against the legislators, the final outcome may not be the same as certain quarters are awaiting for and on the lines which the leadership has given to believe.
Though the national leaders lost no time in seeking their resignations and the all the legislators showed no resistance or reluctance in tendering the papers, yet it looks unlikely that the resignations will be forwarded so promptly to the Speaker of the Assembly, sources said. The J&K legislators tainted with charges of cross voting and cash for vote scam are set to meet the national president individually tomorrow evening. Consequent upon his meeting with the MLAs, Nitin Gadkari will hold separate meeting day after tomorrow with some senior most leaders of the party to discuss the matter threadbare and the political implications any decision shall entail.
Since Gadkari was unavailable due to pre occupation with the polls in other states, this meeting got delayed and so has been any ‘meaningful’ decision elusive as far as the disciplinary action against the tainted lot is concerned. Sources said though resignations addressed to the Speaker of J&K Assembly have already been taken by the party, the High command is unlikely to announce any such action which may result in suspension or disqualification of the members from the House. However, the party leadership is also said to be studying the anti defection law and invoking the same against the MLAs for defying the whip is one suggestion coming unanimously sources added. In the meeting with some senior leaders, the discussion shall revolve on studying the present political environment in the state vis-à-vis the political prospects of the party, particularly in Jammu from where these legislators belong, besides taking a view of the dent in the image and credibility of the party caused by the cross voting act, sources added. Sources also indicated that the High command may finally come out with some ‘middle path’ instead of disqualification of members right away, which will serve the twin purpose of showing some action and at the same time enable the party to retain the members in the House. The party may not be interested in ‘disqualification theory’ at the moment because in both ways the party stands a loser as the damage done this time is beyond immediate repair.
In other words, even though the legislators have been asked to resign, it is unlikely that the high command may forward these to the Speaker so soon. The party leadership will consider other options as well in terms of the posturing for ‘tough action’, said the sources adding that it may not be wise and fruitful step to plunge hurriedly into any action which will deprive the party as many as 11 legislators spontaneously. Since the number of legislators is not so small, it matters to the party politically to ‘retain the flock’ rather than losing them, said the sources. However, the fact also remains there is tremendous pressure not only from the local unit functionaries but also from some senior leaders and office bearers in Central leadership that a stern action is warranted in the matte so as to send a message across that party high command has really acted on high moral ground in the matter.
