Brick kiln owners warn to increase rates of bricks | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, April 20: Brick kiln owners have warned to increase the rates of bricks in view the rising prices of the raw material. Addressing a press conference, association president Janak Raj Majahan, who addressed a press conference today, alleged that cost of raw material needed for manufacturing the bricks have increased in recent past which has hugely affected the people associated with the industry. “We have met District Development Commissioner (DDC) number of times and appealed him to consider our plea keeping in view the changes in the market, but no consideration has been given”, Mahajan said.As per the association cost of coal, firewood, labour, clay, sand and water and other necessary materials has increased in last one year which in turn has affected the production process leading to shortage of this basic component of construction.“Rates of coal have been hiked by 63 per cent by Coal India Limited; it has in turn increased the cost of production. We have to bear it all”, Majahan said. Association has submitted before the administration that B-class bricks be allowed to sold at Rs 4175 per thousands units, class bricks at Rs 3800 per thousands and tiles at Rs 4375 per thousand units. It is pertinent to mention here that since past few years brick kiln owners are demanding that government should roll back the license fee for renewal of existing units which has been increased from Rs 2000 to Rs 10000 while the fee for setting up of news kilns was from Rs 5000 to Rs 30000. They have also demanded that VAT imposed on them by the government should also be lifted as they are already paying tax on the coal, a basic material for the production. “Despite that fact that without these there would be no construction activity, government is suppressing us with heavy taxes. We fail to understand weather they want to close down the industry” said another member. During the press conference association members also demanded special concession from the government for the losses they have suffered during the recent rainfall during which raw bricks were destroyed. They have demanded that a special relief package be announced for the unit holders or they should be given concession in tax payment. Association also wants amendment in the Brick kiln Act 2010 which they claim is not in the interest of the industry.
