Jammuites enjoy Dogri Bhaaks

Jammu, Apr 20: In order to preserve and promote the unique folk heritage of Duggar of singing of Bhaakh, Dogri Sanstha today organized a programme, first of its kind, in which veteran and young singers presented Dogri Bhaakhs in their soulful voices.
The other highlight of this unique endeavour is that the wording of all Bhaakhs sung on this occasion was penned down by none other than the well known litterateur and film personality Ved Rahi, who was also the Chief Guest in this programme held at K.L. Sehgal Hall.
Zafar Iqbal Manhas, Secretary of J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages presided over the function where as Vinay Saraf was special guest on the occasion.
Earlier speaking on the occasion, Ved Rahi informed the audience that he has recently written a book on the life and achievements of Krishna Kumari and he felt that people of this region are fortunate to have, amongst themselves, an outstanding singer of the caliber of Krishna Kumari who has been endowed with a voice which is most suitable for the singing style of Bhaakhs. He also emphasized that bhaakhs is a unique musical art form of Duggar and all efforts should be made to keep it alive and further enrich it.
Prof. Lalit Magotra, President of Dogri Sanstha, in his welcome address alluded to the typical nature of ‘Bhaakh’ and its importance in cultural life of Duggar. He said Bhaakh provides a unique identity to the folk music of this region as this style of singing is typical to this area, having been evolved here only
Zafar Manhas in his presidential remarks complimented Dogri Sanstha, for having organized a programme based purely on Bhaakhs and emphasized that all folk art forms of the J&K State need to be saved from onslaught of the so called ‘modern’ culture. He shared with the audience various efforts undertaken by the State Academy to promote and showcase the rich folk art forms of the J&K State at national and international level.
Prof. Veena Gupta, the General Secretary of the Sanstha thanked the audience, artistes and media at the conclusion of the programme, which was ably and artistically conducted by Prof. Shashi Pathania.
Those who lent their melodious voices to the musical composition include internationally renowned Bhaakh singers Krishna Kumari and Pradyuman Singh Jandrahia as well as young artistes like Kusha Sharma, Chinmai Sharma and Indu Bala. Music of these Bhaakhs was composed by Sh. Brij Mohan. Sh. Raj Kumar Behrupia, an accomplished stage artiste, also participated in the presentation. A large number of writers, artistes and prominent citizens constituted the audience, which thoroughly enjoyed this traditional folk form of singing.
