Sham seeks support of civil society to curb female feticide | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMM, Apr 20: Expressing grave concern over the declining female sex ratio in the state, Minister for Health and Family Welfare today called for effective measures to curb the practice of sex determination. He asked the enforcement agencies to gear up and conduct surprise checks frequently on ultrasound clinics and Nursing Homes to stem the rot. Stressing the need for launching a massive public awareness campaign through different mediums about the repercussions of imbalanced sex ratio, Minister said that situation is becoming alarming day-by-day and time has come to act decisively against the erring clinics. Warning the clinic owners and practitioners of strict action for indulgence in sex determination, he termed the female feticide a big crime calling for stern punishment. Speaking at a workshop and media sensitization on pre-conception and post-natal sex determination test, organized by the State Health Society (NRHM) in collaboration with Department of Radio Diagnosis & Imaging, Government Medical College, Jammu, here today, the Minister said that it is the duty of every conscientious citizen to contribute towards the social cause and support the Government in eradicating this heinous crime from the society. Minister stressed upon the doctors, paramedics and ASHA workers to discharge their duties with honesty, devotion and commitment and maintain the credibility of noble profession. He cautioned all those who are vitiating the atmosphere for their petty gains and promoting waywardness in the entire society. Director, NRHM Dr. Yashpal Sharma in his power point presentation apprised about the overall scenario of sex ratio in the State. He informed about the steps initiated to deal with the situation. Principal Government Medical College, Jammu Dr. Rajinder Singh, Director Health Services Dr. Ashok Sharma, HoD Radiology, GMC, Dr. Ghan Shyam Gupta, senior faculties of Gynae, Radiology, Chief Medical Officers, heads of institutions of Jammu division, representatives of social organizations, NGOs, prominent citizens and large number of media persons were also present on the occasion.
