UDHAMPUR, NOV 16 To make the farmers aware about the National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (NAIS) a joint meeting of officers of Agriculture Department, Bankers and progressive farmers was held here yesterday. The Chief Agriculture Officer, Udhampur, Mr. Kuldeesh Sharma presided. Chief Manager, Lead Bank, Udhampur, Mr. Y.K. Upadhaya, DDM NABARD, Mr. Rattan Lal, Administrative Officer, Regional Office, Agricultural Insurance Co. Ltd., Dr. Vidya Sagar Gedam, District Manager, Bankers, Sub- Divisional Agriculture Officers and farmers participated in the meeting. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Agriculture Officer said that the aim and objective of NAIS is to provide insurance coverage and financial support to the farmers in the event of failure of crops as a result of natural calamities, pests and diseases besides encouraging the farmer to adopt progressive farming practices, high value in puts and higher technology in agriculture. He called upon the farmers to come forward and avail the benefits of this insurance scheme. Mr. Sharma directed the field functionaries of his department to activate their activities in this direction so that maximum number of deserving farmers are benefited. Dr. Vidya Sagar while giving a detailed resume of the scheme said that this scheme is meant for providing succor to farmers in the event of failure of their crops due to natural fire, lightening, storm, hailstorm, hurricane, typhoon, floods, drought, dry spells, pests and diseases etc. He informed the meeting that loaning period for Kharief crops starts from April to September and October to March for Rabi crops while the cut off date for these two crop seasons for receipt of declaration is November and May. 50 per cent subsidy is also applicable in case of small and marginal farmers, he added.
