Options with Mirwaiz Hurriyat | Retain its `moderate’ tag or Abbas Ansari? | | News Analysis Early Times Report Jammu, April 21: Even as Hurriyat (M) executive member, Moulana Abbas Ansari got appreciation from the Chief Minister for showing exemplary courage to interact with the interlocutors, the separatist amalgam has limited options to deal with the crisis arising out of Ansari’s meeting with Padgoanker led team. If Abbas is retained, the conglomerate may break. And if he is terminated, the amalgam may lose its `moderate’ tag. The Hurriyat (M) was pushed to the wall when the Home Minister, P Chidambaram offered secret talks to the separatists. A senior leader, Fazal Haque Qureshi was shot at. The bullet crippled the veteran leader for life. Soon after, the members revolted and sought reconstitution of the executive council. However, the amalgam survived the storm by promising changes in the set up. Last week, a local news agency interviewed one of the interlocutors (MM Ansari) at New Delhi. Ansari disclosed that a senior leader from Hurriyat (M) had met them. He also disclosed that he had received a representation from Mirwaiz Umer Farooq during their Rajouri tour. Mirwaiz responded next day by saying that nobody had met the interlocutors in official capacity. Mirwaiz did not deny Ansari’s claim. The interview caused embarrassment to the conglomerate. Before the amalgam could set things right, it received yet another shock when the Chief interlocutor, Dileep Padgoanker told media persons about his meeting with Moulana Abbas Ansari. This time Hurriyat took prompt action. A show cause notice has been served and Abbas has been asked to explain his position within a week. The Hurriyat has also called a meeting of its executive council on Monday to discuss the development. The options with the conglomerate are limited. If Abbas is retained, some members may opt out of the amalgam. This is exactly what happened after 2002 assembly elections. Geelani told the united Hurriyat that a leader had taken active part in elections. However, nobody heeded him and the conglomerate broke. Kashmir has changed a lot since 2002. In contemporary Kashmir the Hizbul Mujahideen Chief and the even Syed Ali Geelani cannot afford `misadventures’. The angry youth torched their effigies last year. Both the leaders were forced to explain their position. The second option (terminating his membership) is equally dangerous. By terminating Abbas, the Hurriyat (M) shall lose its `moderate’ tag. Can the amalgam afford it?
