BJP: Suspension no punishment, it’s a diversionary tactic

STARK REALITY
RUSTAM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Apr 21: That the BJP high command would neither dismiss from the party the 7 BJP MLAs who voted for the Congress and NC candidates during the April 13 Legislative Council elections nor send their resignation letters to the Speaker of the J&K Legislative Assembly was a foregone conclusion. There was also no doubt whatever that the central BJP leadership would buy time by taking recourse to diversionary tactics and technicalities to mislead and hoodwink the outraged public opinion and not take a stern action against those who violated the people’s mandate for the sake of easy money and other benefits fearing the party would suffer a humiliating defeat if elections are held at this juncture to fill the seats to be caused due to the dismissal of the corrupt-to-the-core and unscrupulous BJP MLAs. The high command has merely suspended them from the party and served them a show cause notice asking them why should not they be expelled from the party for a period of six years.
What the central BJP leadership has done just cannot be construed as a stringent action against the erring BJP MLAs. For, suspension means no punishment; those who raped and murdered democracy for petty pecuniary benefits would continue to loot and fleece the public exchequer and avail other benefits, notwithstanding the fact that they have forfeited their moral and political right to represent the people they have ditched, humiliated and cheated.
The consensus in Jammu province was that the time had come for the central BJP leadership to not only show the door to the erring BJP MLAs, but also to initiate legal proceedings against them in order to produce a moral effect and assuage the hurt feelings of their constituencies. The people had voted for them in 2008 with the hope that they would enter the law-making body and defeat those demanding autonomy or self-rule or those questioning the very accession of the state with India or those advocating the cause of Pakistan and those working overtime to jeopardize their legitimate socio-economic and politico-administrative rights. This was the nature of the people’s mandate.
The very fact that central BJP leadership suspended the erring BJP MLAs only after listening to them and after verifying certain facts, including the telephonic conversations between them and those who purchased their loyalty, did establish their prima facie involvement in the immoral and undemocratic drama. The people would have really appreciated the central BJP leadership, had it dismissed the erring BJP MLAs from the party, sent their resignations to the Speaker and urged him to accept the same. That it didn’t do that and, instead, only suspended them does suggest that it is not really committed to probity in public life or it is not committed to fighting the menace of corruption and eradicating it.
If the central BJP leadership feels that what it has done to the erring BJP MLAs would assuage the hurt feelings of the people, then it is obvious that it is living in isolation and in the world of the past. The outraged people want a definite action. They want surgery. If the central BJP leadership sincerely wishes to regain the lost ground in Jammu province, it has no other option but to respect the people’s sentiments. Not only this, it has to revamp the state unit of the BJP, as the party leadership in the state is just not competent to manage the party affairs and exercise moral control over the legislators. The state unit of the BJP needs a new team consisting of dedicated and ideologically committed workers.
