| Azad discusses upliftment of backward tribes | | | Jammu, Nov 17 Chairman National Commission for Denotified Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes Mr. Balakrishna Sidram Renke called on Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad here today. Member of the Commission Mr. Laxman Bhai K. Patni and its Member-Secretary Mr. Laxmi Chand were also present. Mr. Renke apprised the Chief Minister that the Commission has been setup by the centre to recommend measures required for improving the socio-economic conditions of backward tribes in the country. The Commission setup in February this year will submit its report in February 2007. Chief Minister while interacting with the 3-member team of the Commission said that several schemes have been launched in the state for socio-economic and educational advancement of Gujjars, Bakarwals and other scheduled tribes and economically weaker sections of the society. He said that Gujjar and Bakarwal hostels have been setup in the state at the district level while scholarships are also being provided to the students of such communities to facilitate their education. In addition, mobile schools have been established to cater to the educational requirements of the children of migratory Gujjars and Bakarwals. Mr. Azad said that several other schemes are also being implemented for overall upliftment of these communities in the state while several measures are afoot to further improve their socio-economic conditions. Several matters like setting up of residential schools for improving literacy rate among these communities and provision of milk collection and processing centres for ensuring sustainable development of these communities also came under discussion during the meeting. |
