Surprise checking: New way to curb female feticide | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, April 23: The home state of the Union health minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad is the only one state which has seen the largest decline in the sex ration, as per the census report. With reports of ‘sex determination syndicate’ operating in Jammu and Kashmir worrying the Health officials, government has decided to conduct surprise checks on the ultrasound clinics and nursing homes. Sources said that final approval is being given to constitute special checking squads for the purpose as all earlier efforts have not yielded any positive effects on the clinics involved in the sex determination tests which led to increase in female feticide. According to report, of female sex ratio is decreasing day by day. It is mentioned that the state government is worried about declining female sex ratio in the State as there is considerable fall in the sex ratio. The Census has confirmed a steep fall in the female sex ratio in Jammu and Kashmir, the government has announced various concerte efforts to keep a check on female feticide. In 2001, the number of girls per 1,000 boys (aged between 0-6) stood at 941, the latest Census found that it has plummeted to 859. At present, there are 82 fewer girls in the state per 1,000 boys. Sakina Itto, Social welfare association, said “The actual problem is that people tend to prefer a male child, which is the major cause for the decline in the sex ratio”. Source said that as per the previous record Jammu and Kashmir, is the only state where the female sex ratio has decreased. Since past few years there has been a demand from various NGOs and social organizations to create a state level Supervisory Board for monitoring and reviewing the implementation of the PNDT act in the state. Health Director, Ashok Sharma said that we are properly checking the ultrasound clinic and the doctors and people those who checking in sex determination. He further said that the accused under PNDT Act should be given three years punishment with Rs 10000 as fine.
