Conservation of heritage sites priority of Government: Jora | Seminar on heritage and tourism | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 23: Minister for Tourism Nawang Rigzin Jora said the government is striving to showcase J&K’s rich and diverse heritage to diversify tourism and cater to multifarious interests of visitors coming to the state. He said that measures are afoot to bring all heritage sites on tourism map of Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking at one day seminar on ‘Heritage and Tourism’, organized by INTACH Jammu Chapter in collaboration with State Tourism Department and University of Jammu today at Banquet Hall, Jammu, the Minister said artistic richness of under renovation Mubarak Mandi Complex in Jammu, Hariparbhat in Kashmir and Budhist Monasteries in Ladakh clear apt indicators of J&K’s heritage marvel. He said several heritage sites spread across the State depict cultural depth of the State that is being brought on the canvas of tourism. Re-emphasizing his commitment to link Jammu’s past with present by preserving heritage sites and working on their upkeep, Jora said instructions have been issued to the concerned authorities to fast track conservation and protection of historical monuments and sites. He said fillip in State’s tourism economy is embedded in linking it with cultural distinctiveness of the state, which can attract domestic, foreign and Indian diaspora to the state. Minister said that government has declared 39 monuments as state protected heritage sites, adding that a whooping amount is being expended on the restoration and conservation of these heritage sites across the state. Jora said that all the regions of the state have their own distinct identity and cultural heritage, which is being protected and showcased as heritage tourism. He said government has passed a legislation for protection and conservation of heritage sites, adding under the Act a Heritage Development Authority would be set up to do the job, he said rules for setting up the said Authority is in process and added that a corps fund of Rs 50 crore would be kept under the disposal of the Authority for taking up necessary conservation of heritage sites. Chairman INTACH Maj. Gen (Retd) Mr. L. K. Gupta, State Convener INTACH Salim Beigh, Convener INTACH Jammu Chapter S. M. Sahni, also spoke on the occasion and threw detailed light on the subject. They also gave their valuable suggestion for promotion of heritage tourism in the region. Director Centre for Studies of Museology, University of Jammu, Prof. Poonam Choudary, gave a power point presentation on the importance and built heritage on Mughal Road with the suggestions for conservation of the monuments in the area.
