BJP down and out in Jammu and Kashmir | Charges And Countercharges | | Rustam jammu, April 23: The battle lines are clearly drawn between those BJP MLAs who were suspended by the party high command the other day following a series of meetings in New Delhi and those declared innocent by it. It's now virtually a do or die battle for them. Both have made their intentions public and both have decided to take on and expose each other's misdeeds and wash dirty linen in public ignoring the party high command's suggestion to the contrary. The fact is that the suspended BJP MLAs have contemplated a major coup against the party and decided to lower the image of all others, including a particular MLA and the party leadership. It must remain a matter of shame that the BJP MLAs have, instead of accepting their guilt, decided to further vitiate the political atmosphere and play with the sensitivities of their constituencies. It is quite evident from what happened on Thursday and Friday that the suspended BJP MLAs have not taken kindly the decision of the party high command to stem the rot and take some half-hearted measures to restore the people's confidence in the so-called party with a difference. The high command has only suspended the erring MLAs and not shown them the door. The manner in which the suspended MLAs have taken on the party high command and levelled serious charges against some of those four cleared by the 11 Ashoka Road, New Delhi, has only established that they have no regard whatever for the people's sentiments and the system and that could go to any extent to harm the party itself that had given them the mandate and the status. While two of the seven suspended MLAs, who have lost their face and become an object of contempt and ridicule, have rejected the decision of the high command as unfair and partisan, others have also questioned the rationale behind the decision, which has been by and large hailed by the dumb-founded and cheated BJP cadres and the people. The suspended BJP MLAs have virtually accused the party high command of siding with those MLAs who, according to them, have always sided and hobnobbed with the ruling party (read NC). In fact, they have accused the high command and one particular BJP MLA without naming him of hatching a conspiracy to marginalize the group headed by one of the suspended BJP MLAs (read the one who has also been removed from the position of Leader of the BJP Legislature Party in the Assembly). They and the three other suspended MLAs have pleaded not guilty, asked the Speaker of the Assembly not to accept their resignation letters if forwarded to him by the party president and offered themselves for Narco Test and brain mapping subject to the condition that those who have been cleared by the party high command are also subjected to Narco Test and brain mapping. It is obvious that they adopted this line at the behest of their group leader, who has, it appears, also made up his mind to take on the party high command and his detractors in the party in Jammu and Kashmir. He is, according to reliable sources, planning a final assault on the party, which has already fallen from grace owing to its various acts of omission and commission, its ineffectiveness, its failure to ensure discipline in the party and its failure to make all the 11 MLAs vote for the party candidate. One thing is quite clear: the suspended MLAs are going to queer the pitch for the party in the Jammu province and create a situation that would ultimately lead to the demise of the BJP in the state. One thing more: those who have been given a clean chit by the party high command are also in deep trouble because there are reports that an independent candidate (Kathua) Charanjit Singh had voted for the BJP candidate Ranjit Singh. This means one of the four cleared MLAs had also voted for the coalition's candidate. In other words, it also means that the BJP high command has to identified that "black sheep" also and until and unless that happens the credentials of all the four BJP MLAs would remain doubtful. It is a critical situation and one can say that the party in the state is not only down but also out and that it would take many, many years for the party high command to win back the people's trust. What should the party high command do at the critical juncture? It must go in for a major surgery. It must revamp the organization in the state and it must subject all the 11 MLAs to Narco test and brain mapping to find who voted for whom. For, the credentials of all the 11 MLAs are doubtful. |
