CPI-M opposes grant of extensions to govt officials | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, April 24: The Communist Party of India (M) today urged the government to stop forth with the practice of granting extensions to any state government official. Nobody is indispensable in any institution, department or system, CPI(M) State Secretary Mohammad Yousuf Targami said in a statement here. ''Grant of extension in services to some select officials is detrimental to lakhs of unemployed youth in the State and bound to nurture nepotism and corruption wrought with dangerous consequences'', he said. Tarigami said that official graft continues to rule the roost in the entire establishment, lamenting absence of any effective mechanism in place to take on the monster of corruption. The State Accountability Commission continues to be defunct and the Vigilance Organisation toothless, he said. Tarigami stressed the urgency of upholding sanctity of government institutions. Politicisation of the institutions has to be stopped to allow the functionaries to work in the interest of public undue. Interference destroys institutions leading to injustice and worst kind of discrimination. He said the RTI has not picked up in the State in a desirable direction because government functionaries are not sensitised properly about its usage. "People should make use of RTI for enforcing transparency in the system," Tarigami added.
