Early Times Report

JAMMU, Apr 24: Two top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commanders, wanted in several killings and attacks on security forces, were shot dead by a joint column of army and police in a six-hour-long gunbattle in Akhran Khari forests close to Danipai nallah in Banihal in the wee hours of Sunday morning.
There was no casualty on the part of security forces, police sources said. The slain militants were identified as top LeT commander Mohammad Aiyaz Malik alias Abu Musa, son of Abdul Rahim Malik of Shagun, Banihal, and Farooq Ahmed Thakri alais Zulfikar Nain of Ugad, Doda.
Acting on a tip-off about the presence of militants in Akhran Khari forests, jawans of 22 Rashtriya Rifles and police launched a "seek and destroy" operation in the area late Saturday night.Sources said while the jawans were nearing their hideout at about 1
am, the two militants opened heavy volume of fire and also hurled grenades.
Fire was returned. In the ensuing exchange of fire that came to an end at about 6.50 am, the jawans killed both the militants without suffering any casualty, the sources added.
Two AK rifles along with six magazines and 200 rounds, one Chinese grenade, a satellite phone, a mobile phone, a pair of binoculars and a compass were recovered from them.
Sources said the killing of the two commanders had broken the LeT backbone in the state. The army troops were led by Maj Abhishek Chakravati.
Musa had escaped a few gunfights in the past and was involved in many attacks on security forces. Zulkar was active in Shopian belt of south Kashmir and shifted his
base to south Pir Panchal area in 2008. He was the self-styled Operations chief of the area. While Musa joined militancy in 2002 at the age of 16, Zulkar became active since 2008.
Several FIRs were registered against Musa in Banihal and Gool police stations, including the killing of two jawans of 23 RR on two different occasions and the recent killing of two T A jawans at Bhimdassa, Gool.
He had also attacked STF picket at Ahma in 2009 in which some police personnel were wounded. In August 2010, he had killed Israel Gujjar of Akhran Khari, suspecting him to a police informer. He was also in close contact with his LeT mentors across the
borders. Quoting a wireless conversation between him and with his across the border mentor intercepted two days back, sources said he was directed to activate internet services on his new mobile set and use them.
Zulkar had been motivated by LeT commander Iqbal to join the outfit. He had later shifted his area of operation to Banihal and Gool. He was with Musa when two T A jawans were killed at Bhimdassa in Gool.
With their killing, LeT had been almost wiped out from Ramban district, the sources added.Sources said HM's Qari Zubair, who was killed along with his two associates in the area in February this year, had made the last call Musa and asked him to revenge his killing by killing police and army jawans.
