JAMMU, Apr 24: It was expected that Syed Ali Shah Geelani & Co would reject outright the Union Government’s decision to relax rules governing recruitment to the Central paramilitary forces for all in the state, including Dogras, Kashmiris and Ladakhis, or summarily repudiate the Union Government’s decision to put the Dogras of Jammu province at par with those inhabiting Kashmir and Ladakh and it has actually happened. “We want complete revocation of the Dogra certificate order and we reject all amendments whatsoever in it. If there is any plan to offer any new relaxations in service to the residents of Jammu and Kashmir, it shall not need any new certificate to prove the eligibility,” he said while rejecting the Union Government’s rational decision.
Geelani, who has gone astray and has been provided a foolproof security cover by the state government and given unbridled freedom to air poisonous views and pour venom on the Dogras, has not stopped here. He has further said: “Jammu and Kashmir is not comparable with Manipur, Sikkim, Nagaland or any other state. It is a disputed state with unique and sensitive issues. Nevertheless, India has always tried to affect the disputed status of the state to make us equal to the other states. Through deceit, India dishonored its own law by changing the nomenclature of president (read Sadar-e-Riyasat) and Prime Minster (read Wazir-e-Azam)…The practice is still on. And to accomplish the task, policies are floated time and again to trap Kashmir both militarily and constitutionally.”
Geelani is not the only Kashmiri fanatic who has been denouncing the Dogras. Almost all the Kashmiri leaders, including those belonging to the so-called mainstream parties like the National Conference have no love lost for the Dogras. In fact, there is no fundamental difference between what Geelani has said about the Dogra certificate and what the likes of Mehboob Baig in the National Conference have been saying on the issue the Dogras hold very dear.
The latest to join the anti-Dogra crusade is Hizb-ul-Mujahideen. Terming the decision to issue of Dogra certificates to the Dogras of Jammu province as a “conspiracy by India to create fissures among the people of Kashmir, the Muzzaffarabad-based Hizb spokesman Ehsan Illahi on Saturday declared that “well organized armed and political struggle is the need of the hour to liberate Kashmir.” The decision to issue Dogra Certificate is nothing but “a conspiracy to divide people of Jammu and Kashmir” and “there is a direct hand of Indian intelligence agencies behind it,” he has said in a statement. He made this rabidly anti-Dogra statement after “an important meeting” that was held under Hizb chief and chairman of United Jehad Council (UJC) Syed Salah-ud-Din in Muzzafarabad.
What Geelani and other fanatics and separatists in Kashmir have said about the Dogras and the Dogra certificate should leave none in any doubt that the former are all out to destroy the very identity and personality of the Dogras and that they would feel satisfied only if the authorities in New Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir dump and starve the Dogras. Such is nature of their contempt and hatred for the Dogras.
The authorities are squarely responsible for vitiating the atmosphere in the state. They are responsible because they have abdicated their authority in favour of Geelani, who is playing all the shots, dictating terms and creating ill-will between the Dogras and Kashmiri Muslims, despite the fact that the Kashmiri Muslims have been participating in the ongoing Panchayati elections in large numbers and with great enthusiasm ignoring his threats and attempts at intimidation.
Rein in this fanatic in order to avert the impending disaster: Conflict between the brave Dogras and the fanatics. The authorities cannot allow these fanatics to pour venom on the Dogras whose patience is can end anytime from now. They are already seething with anger; they are already fed up with the discriminatory policies being evolved and implemented ruthlessly by the Kashmiri-dominated state government.
