Large turnout in Panchayat elections encouraging trend : Soz | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT UDHAMPUR, April 24: Expressing great satisfaction on the large turnout of people in the ongoing Panchayat elections in the state, the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Prof Saifuddin Soz said that this process would strengthen the democracy at the grass root level. Addressing a Congress rally here today, PCC Chief said that large turnout of people in the elections to the Panchayats is an encouraging trend. “Despite an incident of killing, the enthusiasm of the voters clearly indicate that there is no role of gun in the situation and all issues can be settled by sitting across table in the democratic setup, “ Soz said Soz appealed the people to elect honest and capable candidates so that problems of masses are being addressed effectively besides further strengthening the basic institution of democracy. He hinted that elections to the Local Bodies would also be held soon and asked partymen and people to gear up their activities for these elections. PCC president favoured necessary amendment in the laws to ensure transparency and check mal-practices in election process to these bodies. Prof Soz exhorted partymen and the people to be vigilant soldiers against corruption at all levels and asked them to monitor the execution of developmental schemes at the grass root level and come forward to identify those indulging in corruption wherever noticed. “Apply some Gandhi Giri as corruption can only be checked with the cooperation of awakened people from the society,” he said Referring to the central funding of Rs 8 crores for Devika River Project at Udhampur during his tenure as Union Minister of Water Resources, Soz said that he received some anonymous letters expressing apprehensions about the proper utilization of these funds. However, he advised people to come out openly against any such thing being noticed by them in any such developmental works in their respective areas. PCC chief said that it is Congress party which can guarantee the unity and integrity of the state and ensure the equitable development of three regions, all districts and all parts of the state. Congress will defeat the designs of communal and divisive forces and strengthen secularism and communal harmony in different sections of society. Speaking on the occasion, newly elected MLC Yash Paul Khajuria thanked Congress President Sonia Gandhi and PCC Chief Prof Saifuddin Soz for granting him an opportunity to serve the people. He assured the party leadership and the people to serve with devotion and dedication. Earlier, PCC Chief was accorded grand reception at Nagrota and Jhajjar Kotli by the party workers led by Ex-MLA Shiv Dev Singh, at Tikri and at Udhampur town by workers of INTUC led by Shri Shiv Kumar Sharma and also at number of places enroute to the venue. Ministers R S Chib, Sham Lal Sharma and Raman Bhalla; Senior Vice Presidents Dharam Pal Sharma, Amrit Malhotra-MLC; Vice Presidents Thakur Hari Singh, Ghulam Haider Sheikh; General Secretaries Ravinder Sharma-MLC, Amolak Singh, MLA Chenani Krishan Chand Bhagat; Indu Pawar-MLA (Mahila Congress President), President INTUC Shiv Kumar Sharma and several other party leaders also attended and addressed the gathering. The rally was organised in the reception of Prof Soz and MLC Yash Paul Khajuria. Meanwhile, on his return from Udhampur, Prof Soz called on Governor N N Vohra here at Raj Bhawan. Prof Soz discussed certain matters of public interest with the Governor and felt satisfied that Vohra took keen notice of the issues raised by him.
