`Omar’s statement is meaningless’ | Kashmir Committee clarifies stand | | EARLY TIMES REPORT April, 25: The Kasmir Committee which was revived recently has said it never sought patronage of any government. “Our credibility is based on our relationship with the people of Jammu Kashmir”,a statement of the committee said. Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah’s statement about the committee, statement said, is meaningless. Omar has said that the committee had no locus standi. The statement said that the party had made clear that it had nothing to do with any government. In our very first press statement we made it clear that “we have nothing to do with the government or its bureaucrats. Nor do we align with or represent any political party. We are a group of concerned citizens supplementing the work of all others who have the same commitment and are engaged in pursuing the goal of Indo-Pak peace and an honorable and viable settlement of the Kashmir problem.” We reiterate that the powers that be in New Delhi have had no role in activating the reconstituted Kashmir Committee “as a parallel forum of a public dialogue with Jammu and Kashmir” as misreported in a section of J&K newspapers. “We do not see any conflict between the Central government appointed Interlocutors and our newly revived Kashmir Committee. Our press statement stated categorically that if their Report is found acceptable to the people of J&K, we would gladly lend it full support”, the statement said adding “Just as civil society groups of India and Pakistan have played a vital role in pushing their respective governments to explore peaceful solutions to Indo Pak conflicts, so also civil society groups in India have a key role in pressuring the Central and state government to redress the legitimate grievances of the people of J&K.” The committee, according to the statement, shall hear diverse voices and understand the fast changing ground reality, not just in the Valley but also other regions of J&K. “We sincerely hope that we will be able to have meaningful dialogue not just with Hurriyat leaders but also with leaders of mainstream parties, including the National Conference. Most importantly, we look forward to a creative dialogue with civil society in Kashmir, Jammu, and Ladhakh regions in order to make common cause with their collective quest for a consensually acceptable peaceful resolution to the Kashmir problem”, the statement said.
