EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Apr 25: The six-day short play fiesta organized by Shivai Cultural Society and Lakshay-the Aim in collaboration with J&K Academy of Art, Culture and languages opened to a grandeur start with two short plays performed in jam-packed K L Sigal Hall.
The event termed as “Theatre Of Convenience’, is based on the idea of providing a loose stage to the actors so that they can perform to their convenient best to bring the latent talent out of themselves.
The event is dedicated to late Sh. Ajit Badyal, former general secretary of Shivani Cultural Society.
Chanakyas Restaurant is the event partner of show.
The first play ‘Awaaz Ka Nilaam” written by Daramveer Bharti and directed by Dhanesh Dogra for Jammu Kala Manch was a small allegory in tribute to the journalism of ethics.
The story constructs between two artists, one being the owner of a newspaper whose ethics are to report the truth despite the ailing condition of his wife, and the other a crook businessman who wants to own the newspaper while, giving money to the gullible journalist for the treatment of his wife.
Before the journalist could have sold off his newspaper to the businessman, the truth drops in over his wife passing away. This gives a reason to him not sell the paper and carry forward his efforts in truthful journalism.
Vijay Goswami as Mr Khajuria, the truthful journalist imbibed the spirit of a mature actor in his persona by performing the role with ease.
Dhanesh Dogra the versatile actor of the state proved his prowess of acting beyond the iota of doubt that he is an actor of substance. He played Mr Dutta to perfection.
Other credits of the play were Manoj Bhatt on music, costumes by Varsha Dogra, , properties by Surbhi Sharma, lights by Arun Kumar. Ajay Kumar acted as PRO.
The production was assisted by Lucky Gupta.
The second play of the day was Manto’s renowned play ‘Toba Tek Singh” which was presented by Bal Rang Kalamanch and directed by Lucky Gupta.
The renowned episode of Toba Tek Singh falling as victim of partition in a mental asylum of Lahore was the gist of the play which was enacted in a very professional manner by the group of artists under the able direction of Lucky Gupta.
The decision to divide the inmates of the asylum also to be sent to their respective countries bring to the fore about the actual mental illness of the sound mind people while the inmates deny to part among themselves.
This leaves Toba Tek Singh falling dead on the no man land that generated the essence of the human bondage of the people of different casts and origin falling prey to political machinations.
Deepak Kapoor, Sunny Mujoo, Happy Gupta, Sushant, Lucky Gupta, Yash Paul, Manjeet Aryan, Anil Singh , Ajay Sadhotra, Manish Malhotra, and Vijay Goswami consisted of strong cast of the play that did commendable justice to their respective roles.
Zafar Iqbal Manhas, Secretary Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages who was the chief guest on the occasion, praised the effort of Shivani and Lakshay for coming up with the unique event of six days theatrical presentations. He was honoured with a memento.
Savita Bakshi, additional secretary who was guest of honour could not make to the show due to some unfortunate eventuality.

Sanjay Gupta, Director, Kajal Suri, ex-officio chairman and Vikram Sharma, general secretary of Shivani cultural society included panel of judges while Anju Jmawal, senior member Shivani presided over as observer
The event conceptualized as ‘theatre of convenience’ by Vikram Sharma, general secretary, Shivani Cultural Society of late has undertaken many novel dramaturgical idioms including ‘Restaurant Theatre’ and Home Theatre’ already making rage in Jammu and Kashmir.
Raveesh Mengi, president Lakshay is the consultant coordinator while Aaditya Bhanu is event manager. Shiv Kumar of Chankaya Restaurant presided over the function.
