Anti-drug cricket tourney concludes | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 25: First Anti-Drug Cricket Tournament concluded on Sunday at Arnia. Kickstarted on Feb 8, the tournament was organized by the Red Rose Cricket Club, Arnia in which a total of 34 teams from Jammu division participated in the event. A total of 31 matches were played during the course of tournament and the final match was played between National Cricket Club (NCC) and K.C. Cricket Club, which was won by the latter by seven wickets. Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture Sham Lal Sharma, who was chief guest at the concluding ceremony, distributed prizes amongst the players. The winning team received cash prize of Rs 1 lakh and runners up team Rs 25,000. The players of the tournaments were awarded trophies. Speaking on the occasion, Minister said that government was committed to promote sports activities to channelize the energy of youth in right direction. He said sports not only keeps players physically fit but also inculcates sense of responsibility and discipline. The Minister stressed the need to revive traditional sports in the country side like wrestling, kabaddi, athletics in line with civilizational culture and identity of Jammu and Kashmir. He urged youth to keep away from the drug addiction and other social evils like alcohol and cigarettes to emerge role models in the society. Appreciating the efforts of the organizers for holding the sports event, he said such activities should also be hosted in other disciplines to create interest among the youth. He expressed happiness over the achievements of local sports persons who have excelled in badminton at the national level. MLA Bishnah, Ashwani Kumar Sharma conveyed gratitude to Member Parliament Madan Lal Sharma for providing funds to develop stadium in Arnia. He said remaining work of the stadium will be undertaken shortly and all necessary facilities developed to facilitate budding players for preparing for inter-state events. He said possibilities will also be explored to develop an indoor stadium in the area. Prominent among those present on the occasion included, Chairman, J&K Cooperative Union, Rajesh Bittoo Chairman Red Rose Club, Arnia, Basant Saini Youth leader Kamal Arora, Director, Indian System of Medicines, Dr. Abdul kabir, Director Family Welfare, Dr. Rakesh Khajuria, Director Floriculture, K. K. Sharma, Director Horticulture, Jia Lal Sharma, CMO, Jammu, Dr. Baldev Raj Sharma, newly elected Sarpanches, Panches and large number of sportspersons and local youth.
