Farooq happy over heavy turnout in Panchayat polls | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Apr 26 Expressing satisfaction over the massive participation of people in the on-going Panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Union minister Farooq Abdullah today said the exercise would help in strengthening democracy at the grassroot level. The establishment of the Panchayati Raj would also help in mitigating people's problems, the National Conference president said interacting with party leaders here. "The people are desirous of seeing their problems addressed and the establishment of the Panchayati Raj will play a vital role in this regard," he said. Abdullah appealed to the people to take part in the remaining phases of Panchayat elections enthusiastically. The absence of the Panchayati Raj was a major obstacle in the development of rural areas, he said adding crores of rupees could be utilised in developmental works after the Panchayats are established.
