SELECTING A RIGHT CAREER
Gurmeet Kaur Allinangal4/26/2011 10:22:30 PM
In this highly competitive era, career options are many as professional spectrum has been multiplying every day. New avenues are being explored, novel areas are being discovered and fresh jobs are being created, and with the expansion of system, organization, institutions and agencies more and more job options open up to the youth of the country.
A right career is the proper choice, a judicial selection whereby an educated youth would grow in the professional world. This is a correct option that a young educated man picks up and tries to get by sheer hard work as it invokes interest in him or her. In some cases, the right career comes as a natural choice, strong commitment and resolution since childhood. For this, a favourable condition or environment forces the Pursuer to go for it. Yet there are other factors like social status, general trend, family choice, father's ambition, guardian's dream or monetary gain which decide the fate of a career selecting young man.
The candidate should be able to decide by the middle of his 10+2 class about the profession he/she wants to choose. There is a possibility of a switchover if one field is not suitable for him. But mostly, the students opt for their favourite professions by the end of Class 10+2 in the schools.
After 10+2, they try for a CA, a BBA or Fashion technology diplomas. There are many other courses which include computers, internet, civil Construction, electrician, mechanical engineering, architecture and medicine. But the mainstream areas do not offer careers now and today, we have more avenues opening up in fashion, textiles, computer software, arts, graphics, design Autocad, CAM CIM, SAP (R/3), beautician and other practical courses. This depends basically upon the aptitude of the candidate. Once he has chosen his profession, he must continuous to struggle till he has achieved his aim.
As' no one is a better judge of him or her', the choice of career depends on the current trends which is highly influenced by the media advice and explanation. In India, 'Power Syndrome' forces the young graduate to opt for civil services as it gives ample opportunity to 'govern' the people and satisfaction of 'serving' the nation. It is a mad race. Every educated young man dreams to be an IAS; more than 2 Lakhs appear in the preliminary Test for more 400 plus seats. What happens to one Lakh ninety nine thousand six hundred competitors? Perhaps they end up in some other jobs like teaching or self business, but most of them turn out to be the frustrated lots. The end is always tragic why? They had no vision to select the right career, neither they paid heed to any advice. They just jumped into the fray without having the prerequisite expertise.
Young students are forced to accept a career they never liked or preferred but accepted because it was their father's wishes and dreams. Career selection badly involves fathers and guardians as well.
So first of all, the meaning of the word 'right' has to understood because unless the right is set in the right direction, the number of wrongs will go on increasing. All these add up to make a new community which could be confused, frustrated and depressed. The word 'right' has various meaning like-'morally good, 'justified', 'factfully', 'correct', 'most appropriate, 'socially fashionable', complete or absolute, exactly or directly, or in a sound or normal State'.
These meanings raise a plethora of questions- is it justified' or socially fashionable', while selecting a right career? Is it factfully correct' or 'important' to go for a certain career option? Or is it the 'most appropriate' option or just 'absolute'?
Yet there are young men who are so wining & witty that they keep several option open; they sail on two or three boats at the same time, so that it one fails to fetch the reward other will surely do. This is a hara-kiri. Only those who have no confidence, no work ethics, no knowledge and no zeal for hard work can opt for such miscellaneous options.
For straight forward students, there is no confusion; once they select a career they stick to it, come what may. They will get success. For confused lots, counseling is a must. As every educated young man has high ambition even if he or she has the skills and expertise for no more than a clerk, he or she may compare herself or himself to the toppers in civil services. Here lies the crux of the matter. 'Man thinks very high of him but in love' said Bacon, and it is this false pride that sends them to the door steps of failure'.
For union government jobs, the government has established a union Public Service Commission (UPSC). For getting selected in IPS, IAS, IFS and other examinations, UPSC is the central authority. There are State Public Service Commissions for each State for various State department selections. National Defence Academy (NDA) has its own examination system. Similarly, Army, Navy and Air Force accept officers and junior entry level personnel on the basis of examinations and tests conducted by Services Selection Board (SSB). The government jobs are quite lucrative now a days in terms of money, status and facilities. The private sector jobs carry more money packages like private Institutes but there is no job Security. Working for private educational institutional they demand much higher changes than most of the students can afford. They should follow a moral code of conduct themselves before they can be called educationists in the true sense of the word.
Many students prefer to study in India. But those who are intelligent, diligent and willing to achieve better goals in their lives, go abroad. Studying abroad became a fashion during the early eighties of the last century. In the new country, it has become a passion. If a student overcomes the teething troubles associated with studies in a foreign country, he is able to define a lucrative career for himself. Further, many students look for greener pastures for employment or starting successful enterpreneurs.
There is no dearth of talent in India. However, the objective of going abroad and studying in good institute can be achieved only through planned efforts. Funds are needed to prepare for such academic adventures and the candidate has also to burn the midnight oil. The Western nations accept only those students who have consistently good academic records, a will to succeed and the ability to work very hard. The concept of studying abroad should not only creates a feeling of thrill in the mind of a candidate, but also it should inculcate a feeling of responsibility in him. The curricula are tough, the assignments are grueling and the competition is severe. The candidate has to prove himself in all the arenas of his academic life. In India, he may choose to skip classes and study during the last few months of the academic, session. But he will not have such "Convenient Schedules" in a foreign country.
It is better to learn the criticism than sweet eulogy as the knowledge and skills of young man can be judged by others. As we go the have dresser to set over hair in right place or right style, so we must visit the counselor to get the right direction over career, in this case, genuine parents can also be of great help.
There is a competition in the professional life or in the post-studies period. He has to earn his bread and butter through toil and special set of skills, which he has acquired in his previous years of life. Then he becomes a father and he has to struggle for his children. This cycle has been going on for centuries.
Students are advised to select the career streams of their choice and then, apply to that educational institutes that would help them achieve their career goals.
