| ENGINEER CORPS DAY CELEBRATED | | | Udhampur, Nov 18 The Corps of Engineers popularly known as the `Sappers’, celebrated 226th anniversary of its raising on today, with the main function in the J&K State being held at the Northern Command Headquarters at Udhampur. In his message to the Corps on the eve of 226th Corps Day , Lt Gen Deepak Kapoor, AVSM, SM, VSM, ADC, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Northern Command extended his greetings to all ranks and families of the Corps The spirit of the Sappers is reflected in their motto of `SARVATRA’ implying that the Sapper is available for any task, anywhere, any time, during war or peace. In the Northern Command, the Corps of Engineers have enormous responsibilities. They construct and maintain habitat for the troops in difficult terrain, adverse climate in areas of Kashmir and Laddakh including Siachen Glacier. The sappers have also been involved in counter terrorism tasks-leading the convoys, clearing improvised explosive devices and taking part in the operations. Their activities also extend to civic action programs (Op Sadbhavana) like construction of bridges, roads and tracks, schools, community development centres and playgrounds in remote areas. The contribution of sappers in diverse conditions and varied terrain has been appreciated by all ranks. The sapper contributes his might to the task of Nation-building chiefly through the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and Military Engineering Service (MES). In times of natural calamities he is amongst the first ones to be called upon to aid the civil administration in rescue and relief work .The corps has a record of outstanding contribution in all operations and has proved its mettle both in war and peace. Sappers are also in the forefront of adventure activities in the Indian Army. Engineer Regiment located at Udhampur has successfully completed a cycling expedition covering approx 1400 km from Udhampur - Pathankot - Mandi - Khoksar - Stingri - Sarchu - Leh - Kargil - Drass - Sonamarg and back to Udhampur on 26 Oct 06. |
