Omar brings ‘close confidante’ as Deputy Vital move ahead of Durbar move | Nasir is MoS Home | | SAROJ RAZDAN Jammu, April 26: In a significant move which has vital connotations ahead of the annual Durbar Move when entire government machinery is shifting to the summer capital Srinagar , Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has made Nasir Aslam Wani, a very close confidante, MoS Home Department. Omar holds the charge of the ministry himself and the post of a deputy remained vacant ever since the NC- Congress coalition came to power in 2008.
Nasir has been entrusted with this important ‘responsibility’ in addition to the ministries he is already looking after. At present Nasir is MOS for two more Departments- Housing and Urban Development and Tourism Department. While Home Departments in any part of the country is important of all other ministries, here in J&K it assumes more significance for apparent reasons. Apart from security related issues the Home department of late has remained loaded and burdened with a host of law and order problems, some of which turned contentious and controversial adding to the worries of the government.
It is apparently, in the backdrop of that heavy ‘load and pressure’ within this ministry, Omar has chosen to share the workload, if not relieve himself, of the vital nuances and intricacies related with the Home Department. And for this responsibility, for Omar Abdullah, there could have been no better choice than Nasir Aslam Wani for varied yet relevant reasons, even as the move is likely to raise some eyebrows and ruffle some political feathers both within the ruling party NC as well as coalition partners.
It is no secret that Wani apart from being a young face of the party is a friend and close confidante of Chief Minister. Since Home ministry is also about taking crucial decisions in day to day matters as also in certain extra ordinary situations, Omar would have no hassles in having this man on board. Second, Nasir is a politician who belongs to Kashmir and it has remained a precedent in J&K with almost all the dispensations to have a man on this post hailing from Kashmir, a move which is again having political connotations. Wani is also believed to be well ‘acclimatized’ with not only the crucial aspects of the functioning of department in terms of the issues it particularly confronts in Srinagar and its outskirts, but also ‘comfortable’ working with the authorities in the departments Home takes care of. The broad and clear message, in deputing him for the post therefore goes that there will henceforth not be much of ‘interference’ and ‘handling’ of the matters that matter in the Home Department by others, no matter they continue to be in the influence and in close network and of the Chief Minister. By making Nasir MOS, Omar has also given this indication the issues and matters would now be channelised through the former, at least in matters which the Police is dealing with.
The only thing where the move looks a little flawed is that Nasir has not been given exclusive charge of the ministry as he continues to hold the charge of additional ministries as well. Whereas the fact remains that Home department working is not only sensitive that warranties full time attention but also exhaustive particularly while dealing with sensitive issues in Kashmir where Omar government is heading to stay for next six months. It also goes without saying that in the backdrop of the last years summer unrest, the burden and responsibility of the Home Department assumes far more significance than all other departments.
