JAMMU, April 27: In a first major upset of the competition, second seed, Vidit Gawri was beaten by little known Janu Gupta in second round of the senior snooker event in the ongoing Jammu District Open Billiards and Snooker Championships at Billiards Hall, MA Stadium, here today.
In one of the closely contested matches of the day, Vidit made a poor beginning losing the opening black ball frame 41-47 to Janu. However, he fought back and won the following two to take 2-1 lead.
Playing against a seeded opponent, Janu had nothing at stake. So, he played confidently in the fourth frame to stun Vidit clinching it (frame) by a wafer thin margin of three points 42-39.
The morale boosting fourth frame win was sufficient enough for Janu to take away the fifth frame and the game also. The score: 47-41, 44-75, 32-57, 42-39, 78-43.
