Jammu University Teachers threatens to adopt agitation path
4/27/2011 10:30:08 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, April 27: Jammu University Teachers’ Association in a general body meeting today unanimously decided to go on one day strike on May 3 in protest against the indifferent and lackadaisical attitude of the authorities (both university and state government) towards the genuine demands of the teachers regarding implementation of the whole package of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations for University and college teachers in spite of the fact that 80 percent of the financial burden of the recommendations would be reimbursed by the Ministry of HRD .
The members said that though the state government claims to have adopted the package vide S.R.O. 284 dated 3/9/2009 in the Government Degree Colleges of the State and the Universities of Jammu and Kashmir and had sent the required documents to the HRD Ministry vide letter No:-HE/Acctts/Imp. of 6th Pay Commission ./2008-09/03 dated 6/1/201, but the papers submitted by the state do not fulfill the necessary conditions laid down by the UGC.
They said that this was made clear by the HRD Ministry to a joint delegation of office bearers of colleges and university teachers’ associations that required grant cannot be released unless the whole package of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendation for University and College teachers is implemented in toto which includes the enhancement of the age of superannuation to 65 years.
It is worth mentioning that some states like M.P and Bihar have already implemented the Composite scheme of the UGC in toto, while some other states like Punjab and Haryana have already paid the Salary arrears to University teachers.
Further, deliberating on the demand of the implementation of the whole package of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations, members resolved that since JUTA office bearers have already represented this issue to all the concerned like Chancellor, Pro-chancellor, Higher Education Minister, Chairman-UGC and the officials in the HRD ministry, but since nothing has happened in this regard, therefore GBM resolved to adopt various agitational modes of protest such as: holding press conferences, protest rallies, dharnas, hunger strikes etc.
They said that the first step in this direction is to go on one -day strike on May, 03, wherein the striking teaching fraternity has decided to boycott all the university engagements including examination work on May 03. The future course of the action would be decided in the subsequent meeting.
Further, to avoid this unpleasant situation JUTA seeks the personal intervention of the Chancellor and the Pro-chancellor to ensure the implementation of the whole UGC scheme in its entire form at the earliest to boost the morale of the teaching fraternity in the entire state of J&K.
