| Transporters hold protest; block vehicular movement | | | Jammu, Nov 18 Intensifying its agitation against the government’s decision to cancel the registration of old vehicles, Jammu Local Truck Operators Union held a protest demonstration and blocked the vehicular movement on busy Tawi Bridge–I for more than two hours, here today. A large number of truck operators assembled at Vikram Chowk area and marched towards the Bridge, this morning, eyewitnesses said. The transporters parked their vehicles on the bridge and staged a Dharna. Shouting slogans against the government, the protestors refused to lift Dharna despite of the intervention by police authorities. The protestors alleged that the government was not paying any attention to their genuine demand and was trying to snatch the source of income of thousands of people across the state. Nazir Ahmed, Chairman Jammu Local Truck Operators Union told News Agency of Kashmir that the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir issued directions for the cancellation of registration of vehicles, which are more than 25 years old. The union, he said, has already challenged the decision in the Supreme Court, which has issued notices to the state. “The High Court had also directed for framing of a committee to look into the suggestion of the transporters but the government was sleeping over the matter and till date no committee has been constituted”, he said. Those trucks whose fitness have expired are not being allowed to ply on the roads as the transport department has refused to renew the fitness certificates. “We have bee approaching the concerned authorities in this regard but our demands have never been looked into”, Nazir added. As the transporters continued with their protest, the police was left with no other option but to divert the traffic from Tawi Bridge-II. “It took us more than one hour to normalise the situation as hundreds of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the bridge”, a traffic police officer told NAK. Situation was pacified only when Deputy Commission Hirdesh Kumar and Senior Superintendent of Police Mukesh Singh reached the spot and assured the protestors that their demands would be taken up with the concerned authorities.
