| Farooq opposes death sentence for Afzal | | | PANAJI, NOV 18 Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah today opposed the death sentence given to Mohammed Afzal Guru for his role in the 2001 attack on Parliament, saying he should be punished for his guilt but not hanged. Talking to reporters here, he said Guru's involvement in the case is not to such an extent that he deserved to be hanged. "I am against hanging anyone, even (ousted Iraqi leader) Saddam Hussein should not be hanged. Same with Afzal Guru." "Guru should be punished but not hanged. Justice should be done if he is guilty," he said. On the Indo-Pakistan relations, Abdullah expressed the hope that the recently resumed bilateral talks will produce some results on thorny issues between the two countries. "Kashmir is a complex problem and its solution needs a multi-pronged stragegy," Abdullah noted. He was in the city to participate in a world peace festival organised at Fatorda, about 30 km from here. |
