EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Apr 28: Time has come for the NC-Congress coalition government to ban entry of persons like president of the contemptuously rejected, defunct and the most looked down upon Bihar-based Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) Ram Vilas Paswan in Jammu and Kashmir, which is already passing through critical times. Ban on the entry of such persons in the state has become absolutely imperative considering the fact that they are visiting Kashmir not to strengthen the national cause, strengthen secular nation-building and harmonise inter-regional relations but to make common cause with the dreaded extremists and bigots like Syed Ali Shah Geelani, accord legitimacy to the ongoing anti-India and communal struggle there, pour venom on our Army and humiliate Dogras to appease the exclusivist and highly intolerant Kashmiri leadership.
Ban on their entry is needed not only to keep these trouble-makers and mercenaries at a distance but also to ensure that they do not do anything that could further vitiate the already rather vitiated religio-political atmosphere in the state and set one ethnic group against another leading ultimately to civil war. In other words, ban on such dubious characters, who have been disowned and discarded with the contempt they deserve by their own constituencies, is in the interest of the state government, in the interest of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and in the larger national interest.
That the likes of Paswan, who have no stakes in Jammu and Kashmir and who simply seek to fish in the troubled waters to promote their ulterior agendas could be seen from what the LJS party president yesterday said in Srinagar during after his meeting with Geelani. He, among other things, said: “Opposing the ‘army’s raj’ doesn’t make Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani ‘a Pakistani’…Geelani is ‘righteous and straight forward’… New Delhi should accept his…points (demilitarization, general amnesty, action against Army and paramilitary forces and revocation of anti-terror laws like the AFSPA and the PSA)…Nothing has been done so far on AFSPA, PSA and detention of youth…118 youth killed last year were not terrorists or Pakistanis; they were Kashmiris. If one youth is killed outside, judicial commissions are set up to probe the death, why not do the same here? Indian media (must) portray things in correct perspective. Three interlocutors— Dileep Padgoankar, Radha Kumar, MM Ansari— (have committed a grave blunder by) not talking to Geelani…”
All this shows that Paswan didn’t see anything wrong in what the likes of Geelani are saying and doing in Kashmir to undermine the Indian sovereignty and the territorial integrity of India and that there is no fundamental difference between Geelani and Paswan, the so-called secular mainstream leader.
Paswan was not content with what he said about Geelani and his demands and about the presence of the Army in Kashmir. He even went to extent of outraging the sensitivities of the Dogras of Jammu province, who occupy geographical area two times that of Kashmir and have been suffering due to the official apathy and discriminatory policies since October 1947. He held the state government responsible for creating a controversy by issuing an order on Dogra certificate and demanded that the same be revoked forthwith. “If Jammu and Kashmir is one entity, then why separate laws and orders for the two provinces,” he asked.
What he asked did establish that he endorsed the Geelani’s stand on the issue without looking into the merits of the case. It would be wrong to say that Paswan was blissfully ignorant as far as the issue of Dogra certificate was concerned. He knew everything and yet he made outrageous comments. Biased as he was, Paswan did not consider it prudent to look all the facts in the face and, instead, accept whatever Geelani told him.
The state government, which is fearing trouble in Kashmir during this summer, must take preemptive measures to ensure that the likes of Paswan do not do anything that has the potential of adding more fuel to the fire and forcing the Dogras to take the law of the land into their own hands to protect and preserve their identity as well as the territorial integrity of the province, called the province of the proud Dogras. The state government should also remember that the Dogras are full integration into India and that they hate the likes of Paswan from the core of their heart. For, they are the Dogras and the Indians at the same time.
